Synopsis Famine in Scotland - the 'Ill Years' of the 1690s by : Karen J. Cullen

This book examines the climatic and economic origins of the last national famine to occur in Scotland, the nature and extent of the crisis which ensued, and what the impact of the famine was upon the population in demographic, economic and social terms. Current published knowledge about the causes, extent, and impact of the famine in Scotland is limited and many conclusions have been speculative in the absence of extensive research. Despite the critical importance of this crisis, one of the four disasters of the 1690s, which are widely acknowledged to have contributed to the economic arguments in favour of the Union of the Parliaments in 1707, the topic has been largely neglected and even underplayed by historians. This is the first full study of the famine, providing a unique scholarly examination of the causes, course, characteristics and consequences of the crisis. A comprehensive study of agricultural, climatic, economic, social and demographic issues, the book seeks to establish answers to the fundamental question concerning the event. How serious was it? Using detailed statistical and qualitative analysis, it discusses the regional factors that defined the famine, the impact on the population, and the interconnected causes of this traumatic event.

Synopsis Records of the General Synod of Ulster, From 1691 to 1820, Vol. 1 of 3 by : Presbyterian Church in Ireland Ulster

Excerpt from Records of the General Synod of Ulster, From 1691 to 1820, Vol. 1 of 3: 1691-1720 The project of publishing the manuscript Minutes of the Proceedings of the General Synod of Ulster originated in a suggestion of the late Rev. Thomas Witherow, D. D., LL. D., Professor of Church History and Pastoral Theology in Magee College, Londonderry. Professor Witherow, in 1871, on the recommendation of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland - of which the Synod of Ulster since 1840 has been a constituent part - obtained from the Synod the loan of its unprinted records, then in the keeping of the Rev. Robert Park, Clerk of the Synod and First Clerk of the Assembly; and also received permission to make extracts from them for historical and literary purposes. A similar use of the records had been previously enjoyed by Professor James Seaton Reid, D. D., M. R. I. A., former Clerk of the Synod and of the Assembly, and by Professor W. D. Killen, D. D., President of the Assembly's College, Belfast. In 1872, when returning the minutes and thanking by letter the Synod for their use, Dr. Witherow suggested that the official records from 1691 to 1803 should be printed, lest an accident might lead to their destruction. This communication was referred to the Assembly then in session, with the recommendation that steps should be taken to have the suggestion carried out; but though a committee was nominated to inquire and report on the expediency of the undertaking, and this committee had the subject before it for two years, at the end of that time it was thought unwise to proceed, until a more prosperous condition of the fund of the Church which is available for such purposes, and a livelier interest of the members in the publication, would warrant the necessary outlay. In 1877, a memorial to the Assembly from the Presbyterian Historical Society of the United States of America, asking for books, documents, and other material which might illustrate Presbyterian history, and an application from the minister of another denomination for leave to consult the manuscript records of the Synod, revived the idea of their publication; and a Committee of the Assembly for Historical Purposes was appointed, with the present Clerk of the Synod and Clerk of the Assembly as Convener, and directed among other duties to inquire into the cost of putting the ancient minutes through the press and to take steps to raise funds for that object. This Committee has now in part performed the task intrusted to it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Evangelical Protestantism in Ulster Society 1740-1890 by : David Hampton

This major new book represents the first serious study of Irish evangelicalism. The authors examine the social history of popular protestantism in Ulster from the Evangelical Revival in the mid-eighteenth century to the conflicts generated by proposals for Irish Home Rule at the end of the nineteenth century. Many of the central themes of the book are at the forefront of recent work on popular religion including the relationship between religion and national identity, the role of women in popular religion, the causes and consequences of religious revivalism, and the impact of social change on religious experience. The authors draw on a wide range of primary sources from the early eighteenth to the late nineteenth century. In addition, they display an impressive mastery of the wider literature on popular religion in the period.

Synopsis A Life of Alexander Campbell by : Douglas A. Foster

The first critical biography of Alexander Campbell, one of the founders of the Stone-Campbell Movement A Life of Alexander Campbell examines the core identity of a gifted and determined reformer to whom millions of Christians around the globe today owe much of their identity—whether they know it or not. Douglas Foster assesses principal parts of Campbell’s life and thought to discover his significance for American Christianity and the worldwide movement that emerged from his work. He examines Campbell’s formation in Ireland, his creation and execution of a reform of Christianity beginning in America, and his despair at the destruction of his vision by the American Civil War. A Life of Alexander Campbell shows why this important but sometimes misunderstood and neglected figure belongs at the heart of the American religious story.

Synopsis The Invisible Irish by : Rankin Sherling

In spite of the many historical studies of Irish Protestant migration to America in the eighteenth century, there is a noted lack of study in the transatlantic migration of Irish Protestants in the nineteenth century. The main hindrance in rectifying this gap has been finding a method with which to approach a very difficult historiographical problem. The Invisible Irish endeavours to fill this blank spot in the historical record. Rankin Sherling imaginatively uses the various bits of available data to sketch the first outline of the shape of Irish Presbyterian migration to America in the nineteenth century. Using the migration of Irish Presbyterian ministers as "tracers" of a larger migration, Sherling demonstrates that eighteenth-century migration of Protestants reveals much about the completely unknown nineteenth-century migration. An original and creative blueprint of Irish Presbyterian migration in the nineteenth century, The Invisible Irish calls into question many of the assumptions that the history of Irish migration to America is built upon.
