Synopsis Pride by : Michael Eric Dyson
Of the seven deadly sins, pride is the only one with a virtuous side. It is certainly a good thing to have pride in one's country, in one's community, in oneself. But when taken too far, as Michael Eric Dyson shows in Pride, these virtues become deadly sins. Dyson, named by Ebony magazine as one of the 100 most influential African Americans, here looks at the many dimensions of pride. Ranging from Augustine and Aquinas, MacIntyre and Hauerwas, to Niebuhr and King, Dyson offers a thoughtful, multifaceted look at this "virtuous vice." He probes the philosophical and theological roots of pride in examining its transformation in Western culture. Dyson discusses how black pride keeps blacks from being degraded and excluded by white pride, which can be invisible, unspoken, but nonetheless very powerful. Dyson also offers a moving glimpse into the teachers and books that shaped his personal pride and vocation. Dyson also looks at less savory aspects of national pride. Since 9/11, he notes, we have had to close ranks. But the collective embrace of all things American, to the exclusion of anything else, has taken the place of a much richer, much more enduring, much more profound version of love of country. This unchecked pride asserts the supremacy of America above all others--elevating our national beliefs above any moral court in the world--and attacking critics of American foreign policy as unpatriotic and even traitorous. Hubris, temerity, arrogance--the unquestioned presumption that one's way of life defines how everyone else should live--pride has many destructive manifestations. In this engaging and energetic volume, Michael Eric Dyson, one of the nation's foremost public intellectuals, illuminates this many-sided human emotion, one that can be an indispensable virtue or a deadly sin.

Synopsis Pride by : Lazaros Zigomanis
Dreams mean nothing unless you have the courage to pursue them. 'The sky blazed with a golden hue that bathed everything in a soft nimbus. The goalposts shone, the grass sparkled, and the light flecked my skin like I'd been dipped in glitter. I felt peaceful - none of the nerves or excitement I usually had before a game. And it didn't seem at all strange that there wasn't a single fan in attendance, or that curlews covered the entirety of that far wing. 'In the middle of the ground, his back to me, Adam swayed on the spot, a shadow shimmering around him. I knew if he turned, I was going to see something I didn't want to see. Now I felt the first tightening in my stomach, the first irregular heartbeat.' *** Luke Miggs wants more than small-town life - the grind of chores on the family farm, playing footy, and drinks with friends. Like maybe doing something about his crush on Amanda Hunt, a barmaid at the local who's smart, funny, and ambitious. Or playing footy in the big league. At eighteen, it can't be too late, can it? There's the Ravens, at least, although the team's little more than battlers. If only they could take their footy seriously, like the reigning champions, the Little Reach Scorpions. Under their tyrannical coach, Claude Rankin, the Scorpions have dominated the competition for ten years. It seems nothing will be different this season. But when Adam Pride emerges from the night and tells the Ravens he wants to play for them, everything begins to change. Pride is a story of friendship and bonds and coming of age, and how the choices of our past can come back to shape our future.

Synopsis Pride's Run by : Cathryn Fox writing as Cat Kalen
Seventeen year old Pride is a tracker—a werewolf with a hunger for blood. Taught to trick and to lure, she is the perfect killing machine. Kept leashed in the cellar by a master who is as ruthless as he is powerful, Pride dreams of freedom, of living a normal life, but escape from the compound is near impossible and disobedience comes with a price. When she learns her master intends to breed her she knows she has to run. Pride soon learns if she is to survive in the wild, she must trust in the boy who promises her freedom, the same boy she was sent to hunt. With life and death hanging in the balance the two find themselves on the run from the Paranormal Task Force—officers who shoot first and ask questions later—as well as her master’s handlers. Can Pride flee the man who has held her captive since birth and find sanctuary in the arms of a boy who has captured her heart? Or will her master find her first?
