The Proceedings describe recent developments in the field of smelting, refining and fabrication of aluminum and magnesium in Canada and abroad.

These proceedings provide an overview of magnesium production technology, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and alloy development. Co-sponsored with TMS by the Magnesium Association, the symposium was divided into several sessions: Electrolytic technology, thermal reduction/environmental, automotive issues and recycling, alloy development/corrosion, solidification, creep properties/heat treating effects, physical/mechanical properties, wrought alloys/thixmolding. A collection of papers from the 2000 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition, held in Nashville, Tennessee, March 12-March 15, 2000.

The Symposium covers most of the aspects of modern aqueous electrometallurgical practice, with a stronger emphasis on copper than zinc and nickel, which can be regarded as being the three major electrolytic metals. Of the minor electrolytic metals, there are contributions describing cobalt, lead and gold electrometallurgy, as well as the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide. The sessions divide neatly into modern copper tankhouse practice, purification techniques, modernization and automation, and new developments. A cross section of worldwide practice is represented, with a perhaps understandable concentration of Canadian operations. Plant tours to a modern zinc electrowinning operation, CEZ Inc at Valleyfield, and one of the world's largest copper refineries, Noranda Minerals, Inc., CCR Division in Montreal East, have been included as an integral part of the Symposium.

This book deals with the fundamental description of the thermodynamics and kinetics of high temperature oxidation of sulphidation of metals and intermetallic compounds. It is a comprehensive account of a large amount of new work in the field including modelling, analysis and a range of experimental methods. The text deals with both basic materials, and some current high temperature structural materials.

This international symposium is in honour of Professor\F\Weinberg who will be retiring from the University of British Columbia this year, following a distinguished career. Six sessions have been organized on Fundamentals of Solidification, Non-ferrous Casting Processes, Continuous and Static Casting of Cast Iron, Novel Solidification Studies and Semiconductor and Optoelectronic Crystal Growth, addressing the state-of-the art in each of these areas. Keynote speakers for the six sessions are: Dr\K\Jackson, Dr\N\Bryson, Prof\H\A\Frederiksson, Prof\I\Minkoff, Prof\M\C\Flemings and Prof\R\Brown.

This international symposium held in honor of Professor J\S\Kirkcaldy, will comprise review and research papers covering both fundamental and applied aspects of ternary diffusion. Over twenty individual contributions by internationally recognized authorities in the field, will be included.

The Proceedings focus primarily on alloys used in the iron and steel industry. Operating papers discuss the production of stainless steel from nickel ore by combining the Krupp-Renn with the BOF process, the production of ferro-nickel by a novel electric furnace process and chromium containing iron in the BOF, as well as furnace lining problems in ferro alloy smelting. A number of papers deal with various aspects of ferro-manganese production and ferro-molybdenum. The use of engineered carbide desulphurizer and the application of innovative cored wire in steel making is highlighted. Studies into the production of titanium silicide and the process leading to the recovery of vanadium from Suncor flyash is presented. Results of experimental work dealing with the preparation of nickel chromium alloys from Bird River chromite and nickel sulphide are discussed.

This book which describes the world of metallurgical processing is influenced by a variety of factors not directly metallurgical. One major factor in all applications is materials handling. In Pyro-metallurgical processes, the processes are interconnected by materials handling systems which often require a major percentage of plant cost. The systems include sampling, storage, weighing, feeding and transporting of materials which all actively affect the performance of the metallurgical processes. Increasing productivity and improvements to plant environment demand that materials handling be improved. At the same time, sophisticated sampling and control systems are required to optimize the recipes and allow controlled reactions. By using handling technologies that accommodate both the process and the environment, sustainable improvements can be made.

Fluoride pollution is a problem in all industrialized countries. The topic of fluorides in medicine and agriculture, and fluoridation of public water supplies is one that has attracted much controversy. This book aims to review the research findings, and provide a comprehensive reference on the effects of fluorides on plants and animals. It also includes information on conducting field surveys, establishing air quality criteria and standards, and the problems associated with fluoride analysis in air, water, soil and vegetation.
