Synopsis Preparing for Earthquakes: Lessons for India by : T. G. Sitharam

The primary goals of this brief are to invoke alertness and solidarity among the public in earthquake prone areas of India, and to empower the community to prepare themselves to face and manage the aftermath of an earthquake. The work presented here sheds new light on the action plans to be taken by the common public and public agencies, before, during and after earthquakes to safeguard lives of people and minimize loss of assets. This carefully presented book articulates various factors related to earthquake preparedness, and develops guidelines and useful tips for communicating them to relevant stakeholders. The book has been divided into three parts: (i) the first providing background which explains earthquakes in general and seismicity of India (ii) the second explores earthquake preparedness intended for individuals, families and various stakeholders, and (iii) the final section which describes various strategies for communities to prepare themselves for a future earthquake.

Synopsis Earthquake Preparedness and Disaster Relief in Nepal by :

Nepal is in one of the most active earthquake regions in the world. Nepal's current non-earthquake-resistant infrastructure, lack of sufficient modern communication networks, and limited facilities and manpower in the medical sector are the major threats to life and property during a major earthquake. On March 31, 2010, under the auspices of three leading Nepali diaspora professional organizations in the United States of America--American Society of Nepalese Engineers (ASNEngr), America Nepal Medical Foundation (ANMF), and Computer Association of Nepal-USA (CAN-USA)--a joint initiative on Earthquake Preparedness and Disaster Relief in Nepal, of which this position/concept paper is a product, was launched to help understand the current status of earthquake preparedness in Nepal. This position paper describes the challenges that Nepal will face if and when another large-magnitude earthquake strikes like the devastating January 16, 1934 Nepal-Bihar earthquake. The paper also provides a list of recommendations to be considered to minimize the loss of life and property, especially in the densely populated Kathmandu valley. The document is peer-reviewed by a group of individuals having expertise in the related areas.

Synopsis Learning from Megadisasters by : Federica Ranghieri

While not all natural disasters can be avoided, their impact on a population can be mitigated through effective planning and preparedness. These are the lessons to be learned from Japan's own megadisaster: the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, the fi rst disaster ever recorded that included an earthquake, a tsunami, a nuclear power plant accident, a power supply failure, and a large-scale disruption of supply chains. It is a sad fact that poor communities are often hardest hit and take the longest to recover from disaster. Disaster risk management (DRM) should therefore be taken into account as a major development challenge, and countries must shift from a tradition of response to a culture of prevention and resilience. Learning from Megadisasters: Lessons from the Great East Japan Earthquake consolidates a set of 36 Knowledge Notes, research results of a joint study undertaken by the Government of Japan and the World Bank. These notes highlight key lessons learned in seven DRM thematic clusters—structural measures; nonstructural measures; emergency response; reconstruction planning; hazard and risk information and decision making; the economics of disaster risk, risk management, and risk fi nancing; and recovery and relocation. Aimed at sharing Japanese cutting-edge knowledge with practitioners and decision makers, this book provides valuable guidance to other disaster-prone countries for mainstreaming DRM in their development policies and weathering their own natural disasters.

Synopsis Civil Engineering for Disaster Risk Reduction by : Sreevalsa Kolathayar

The book is a comprehensive volume on multi-hazards and their management for a sustainable built environment. It focuses on the role of civil engineering in building disaster resilient society. This book brings together all diverse disciplines of civil engineering and related areas (for example, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, construction management, GIS, and remote sensing) towards a common goal of disaster resilience through an interdisciplinary approach. It contains methods and case studies focusing on civil engineering solutions to reduce the disaster risk. The book contents are aligned in line with the priorities set by UN-Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and UN-SDGs to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. The book will be a useful comprehensive reference for disaster risk reduction beneficial for engineering students, teaching faculty, researchers, industry professionals and policymakers.

Synopsis Are You Prepared for a Disaster? by : Rajni Sekhri Sibal

We live in a world which experiences dramatic loss of life due to natural disasters and hazards. This comprehensive book by Rajni Sibal, formerly the additional secretary (disaster management), Government of India, outlines methods for preparing households, businesses, and commercial establishments to address the substantial risk of disasters at home, the workplace and communities at large. Rajni Sibal addresses considerations important in planning for disaster management, from cyclones, chemical spills, floods and landslides to catastrophic events. The book not only includes the procedures used by safety experts but also focuses on areas often overlooked during the reactive and post disaster periods. Packed with information, important contact details and numbers, this book contains a extensive list of the how-to's for avoiding mistakes which turn natural and man-made catastrophes into larger disasters, and makes preparing for disaster less intimidating.
