Although Nelson was the most prominent naval officer of the age, he was only the most successful of a outstanding group of commanders that led the Royal Navy to its unprecedented success in the wars of 1793-1815. The contribution of his contemporaries has been neglected, however, largely because so few admirals have received proper modern study. They marshal significant objections to the fundamental neoclassical assumptions of profit maximization and market equilibrium, which they find ineffective in the analysis of technological innovation and the dynamics of competition among firms.
