Synopsis Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson, Jefferson and Pottawatomie Counties, Kansas by : Chapman Brothers

Excerpt from Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson, Jefferson and Pottawatomie Counties, Kansas: Containing Full Page Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens of the County and of the Presidents of the United States Remarkable stories are told of his great physica. Strength and development at an early age. He was an acknowledged leader among his companions, and was early noted for that nobleness of character, fair ness and veracity which characterized his whole life. When George was 14 years old he had a desire to go to sea, and a midshipman's warrant was secured for him, but through the opposition of his mother the idea was abandoned. Two years later he was appointed surveyor to the immense estate of Lord Fairfax. In this business he spent three years in a rough frontier life, gaining experience which afterwards proved very essential to him. In 175 r, though only 19 years of age, he was appointed adjutant with the rank of major in the Virginia militia, then being trained for active service against the French and Indians. Soon after this he sailed to the West Indies with his brother Lawrence, who went there to restore his health. They soon returned, and in the summer of 1752 Lawrence died, leaving a large fortune to an infant daughter who did not long survive him. On her demise the estate of Mount Vernon was given to George. Synopsis Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson, Jefferson, and Pottawatomie Counties, Kansas by :

Excerpt from Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson, Jefferson, and Pottawatomie Counties, Kansas: Containing Full-Page Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens of the County Together With Portraits and Biographies of All the Governors of the State and of the Presidents of the United States Coming generations will appreciate this volume and preserve it as a sacred treasure, from the fact that it contains so much that would never find its way into public records, and which would otherwise be inaccessible. Great care has been taken in the compilation of the work and every opportunity possible given to those represented to insure correctness in what has been written, and the publishers atter them selves that they give to their readers a work with few errors of consequence. In addition to the biograph ical sketches, portraits of (a number of representative citizens are given. The faces of some, and biographical sketches of many, will be missed in this volume. For this the publishers are not to blame. Not having a proper conception of the work, some refused to give the information necessary to compile a sketch, while others were indifferent. Occasionally some member of the family would oppose the enterprise, and on account of such opposition the support of the interested one would be withheld. In a few instances men could never be found, though repeated calls were made at their residence or place of business. Synopsis Hoosiers and the American Story by : Madison, James H.

A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
