Synopsis Postharvest Biotechnology of Flowers and Ornamental Plants by : Dattajirao K. Salunkhe
The floricultural industry has been undergoing an unprecedented revolu tion in terms of the type of commodity produced and the production and marketing technology in both developed and developing countries. As a result of this revolution, as we know today, there is a flower for every purpose and for every person in the world, as is evident from the slogan of the Society for American Florists: "say it with flowers". In re cent years, the Latin American and European countries have become sizeable competitors for the North American fresh flower markets and the trend continues growing. Like any other crop production, floricultural production can be divided into three basic factors: (1) production costs (2) quality (3) transportation costs. All these must be optimum for this area or industry to be safe from competition. With increasing consumer awareness and the current recession, the pressure from the artificial floral products in dustry and also of neighbouring countries on the American fresh flower industry, and continued competition even amongst the growers, whole salers and retailers, quality in floricultural industry is becoming increas ingly important to all those concerned with handling these products. The visual quality aspects of the product are the sole determiner of consumer acceptability in this industry and, unlike fruits and vegetables, flowers cannot be marketed by just discarding the damaged portion.

Synopsis Genetic Modification of Plants by : Frank Kempken
Conceived with the aim of sorting fact from fiction over genetically modified (GM) crops, this book brings together the knowledge of 30 specialists in the field of transgenic plants. It covers the generation and detection of these plants as well as the genetic traits conferred on transgenic plants. In addition, the book looks at a wide variety of crops, ornamental plants and tree species that are subject to genetic modifications, assessing the risks involved in genetic modification as well as the potential economic benefits of the technology in specific cases. The book’s structure, with fully cross-referenced chapters, gives readers a quick access to specific topics, whether that is comprehensive data on particular species of ornamentals, or coverage of the socioeconomic implications of GM technology. With an increasing demand for bioenergy, and the necessary higher yields relying on wider genetic variation, this book supplies all the technical details required to move forward to a new era in agriculture.

Synopsis Breeding And Biotechnology Of Flowers: Vol.02 by : Dr. A.K. Singh
Flowers are the precious gift which beautify the nature through its different colours and enhance human health. Ornamental plants provide environmental security for immediate living surroundings, thus intensive research in floriculture particularly on the crops were initiated earlier. This book will vividly highlights genetical and breeding application in flower crops covering wide range of aspects. Breeding techniques are largely focused around expediting the production of superior and stable lines in the case of self pollinating crops. Wide hybridization, tissue culture and mutagenesis are employed by breeders to generate new alleles. Broaden available genetic resources; molecular markers are used to assist breeders through marker assisted selection and to identify quantitative trait loci for traits of interest. The book makes the knowhow of breeding in its easiest way to the readers. It has been designed to cover all the aspects of breeding, the basic objectives, different breeding methods, methodology for improvement of specific crops, stress resistance, quality improvement, mutagenesis, molecular breeding and genetic engineering.

Synopsis Micropropagation of Ornamental Plants by : Taoufik Bettaieb
Micropropagation through an in vitro culture technique is a reliable biotechnological tool that holds a better scope and future for the propagation of numerous economically prominent ornamentals, including those having value in the foliage and flowering plants industry. As a lucrative alternative approach to conventional propagation, micropropagation is a highly refined, well-developed and suitable method to produce a large scale of progeny plants which are genetically identical to the stock plant in a short time. Micropropagation of ornamental plants is increasingly and continuously involved in the scientific progress of plant biotechnology and has a relevant horticultural impact. Accordingly, a new book on micropropagation of ornamental plants is always required. Microprpagation of Ornamental Plants: Research and Practice consists of nine chapters divided into four sections authored by experienced and prestigious authors from different parts of the globe. The editor and authors are recognized as eminent scientists in their fields, and they add the quality and credibility to the content. Each chapter is illustrated and attempts to convey the practical as well as the theoretical aspects of microproparagtion. This anthology combines smartly refined micropropagation protocols of a considerable number of economically important ornamental species. Furthermore, the book will serve as a reference for horticulturists, researchers, lecturers, and students in horticulture, agriculture and biotechnology.

Synopsis Ornamental Crops by : Johan Van Huylenbroeck
Ornamental plants are economically important worldwide. Both growers and consumers ask continuously for new, improved varieties. Although there are numerous ornamental species, ornamental plant breeding and plant breeding research is mainly limited to some major species. This book focuses on the recent advances and achievements in ornamental plant breeding. The first part of the book focuses on plant traits and breeding techniques that are typical for ornamental plants. Eminent research groups write these general chapters. For plant traits like flower colour or shape, breeding for disease resistance and vase or shelf life are reviewed. General technical plant breeding chapters deal with mutation breeding, polyploidisation, in vitro breeding techniques and new developments in molecular techniques. The second part of the book consists of crop-specific chapters. Here all economically major ornamental species are handled together with selected representative species from different plant groups (cut flowers, pot plants, woody ornamental plants). In these crop-specific chapters, the main focus is on recent scientific achievements over the last decade.
