Plainfield is Will County's oldest community. The area along the DuPage River was originally home to the Potawatomi Indians. By 1830, a small settlement called Walker's Grove was developed along the DuPage River south of where the village is located today. During the Black Hawk War, these settlers constructed and took refuge at Fort Beggs, named after Rev. Stephen Beggs. In 1834, the village of Plainfield was platted by Chester Ingersoll. This book spans the early settlement, the Civil War years, and the commercial development of the 19th century well into the 20th century and includes a chapter on the 1990 tornado. Tim and Michelle will share the many images taken from early glass negatives in addition to a collection of rare documents and paper items from early Plainfield. These images lend the opportunity to reflect upon Plainfield's rich history.

There are two dozen places in the United States named Plainfield, but Plainfield, Connecticut, was the first. When it was incorporated in 1699, Colonial governor Fitz-John Winthrop named the town for its rich, fertile fields along the Quinebaug River. During the 1700s, the town was transformed from Native American country to a farming community populated by English settlers. In the 1800s, textile mills were built along the Moosup and Quinebaug Rivers, and Plainfield became an industrial town attracting workers from all over New England, Canada, and Europe. Today the textile industry is gone, and the surviving mills have been converted to other uses. Located in the northeastern part of the state, Plainfield is in the heart of the breathtaking Quinebaug-Shetucket National Heritage Corridor.

"Colorado of the East," "the Queen City," "City of Homes," and "Wall Street Suburb" are all monikers that have been applied to Plainfield over the years, but no single phrase can capture the essence of this wonderfully diverse and unique place. From its inauspicious start as an agrarian Quaker community in the fields beyond Elizabethtown, post-Civil War Plainfield developed into a complete incarnation of gilded-age splendor. It flourished briefly as a summer resort before becoming an affluent bedroom community for New York City's financiers and captains of industry. As economic and development patterns changed, Plainfield slipped into a secondary role, but not for long. Rediscovery of its rich history and outstanding architectural heritage by new generations has renewed the vigor that has been so much a part of Plainfield's legacy. Plainfield is a work that expresses the authors' devotion to their hometown. They have carefully selected images that contrast everyday activities with little-known events in the city's three-hundred-year saga.

Plainfield, Indiana was settled by Quakers in the early 1800s. Explore the town's past in images of the old town and its development. In 1820, abolitionist Quakers from North Carolina settled in Plainfield, Indiana. These early settlers provided the foundation for Plainfield's rich heritage, which has evolved into today's diverse blend of residents. In 1832, Levi Jessup and Elias Hadley platted the town of Plainfield with 64 lots straddling the National Road. The record of the first lot sold is dated May 2, 1833--much has happened since that day. Lovely plains and beautiful fields greeted settlers eager to put down roots in the area north of the growing city of Grand Rapids. The northernmost point of the Grand River and its environs, including the Rogue River joining the Grand nearby, offered folks everything they needed: river and road travel, good farmland, plenty of forestland, and enough space to grow and prosper. Soon the area was known as Plainfield Township, with the bustling Plainfield Village at its center. Small communities grew up around the township, including Belmont and Comstock Park that exist today but also Konkle Town and Childsdale, which do not. Plainfield Village is gone as well, but the spirit of those early pioneers lives on. Today Plainfield Township is a combination of city and country, businesses and farms, and longtime residents and those just discovering the beauty of this area that still boasts plains and fields.

Nestled in the northeast corner of Somerset County lies the small, 2.9-square-mile borough of North Plainfield. It is bordered on the northwest by the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains and, to the south and east, the Green Brook provides a natural boundary between Union and Somerset Counties. Rock Avenue, on the west, divides North Plainfield and Green Brook. This borough, named for its proximity to the city of Plainfield, was primarily a farming community. Its growth was stimulated by the mills and quarries built along the streams that flowed through the area and by the construction of the Jersey Central Railroad in the 1850s. North Plainfield grew from 75 residents in 1832 to 4,000 by 1885. Today, approximately 19,000 people reside in this peaceful and picturesque community.

South Plainfield's rich and varied history mirrors that of New Jersey as a whole. Early on, Native Americans first recognized the potential of the area and called it home. Later, in the 166 0s, Baptists from New England, Scottish Quakers, and Dutch settlers erected mills and transformed the forest into farmland. Agriculture remained a mainstay of life in the region into the twentieth century. Railroads and industry, coupled with a growing population, led South Plainfield to declare its independence from Piscataway Township in 1926. In 1924, the town flirted with fame when Hadley Field was selected as the eastern terminus for transcontinental airmail flights. A pictorial tour of the borough's history, South Plainfield highlights the people and institutions that have shaped this community. Views of prominent families, important industries, noteworthy institutions, and local landmarks are all included. Together, they depict the transformation of the area from the sleepy rural hamlets, once called Samptown and New Brooklyn, into a thriving suburban community located at the heart of central New Jersey.

Located in northern Middlesex County, South Plainfield has a rich and fascinating history. It was first settled by the Lenape and later by immigrants from Scotland, England, and the Netherlands. Mills were built, and by the 18th century, it was home to numerous farms and two hamlets: Samptown and New Brooklyn. During the American Revolution, skirmishes shook the sleepy community. The 19th century brought the arrival of railroads and industry. The 20th century saw South Plainfield transformed. The Lehigh Valley Railroad built an enormous coal storage yard. Spicer Manufacturing opened a factory manufacturing universal joints for early trucks and cars. Harris Steel, a fabricator of steel for bridges and skyscrapers, constructed a sprawling plant in South Plainfield. After World War II, the borough grew by leaps and bounds as new suburban developments replaced farms and fields. Today, South Plainfield is a strong community with a diverse population located at the crossroads of central New Jersey.

Plainfield, Wisconsin. 1954. Robbing graves to appease his malevolent desires, Ed Gein inadvertently sets loose an ancient vampire on the unsuspecting town of Plainfield.
