Synopsis Great Ships on the Great Lakes by : Cathy Green

In this highly accessible history of ships and shipping on the Great Lakes, upper elementary readers are taken on a rip-roaring journey through the waterways of the upper Midwest. Great Ships on the Great Lakes explores the history of the region’s rivers, lakes, and inland seas—and the people and ships who navigated them. Read along as the first peoples paddle tributaries in birch bark canoes. Follow as European voyageurs pilot rivers and lakes to get beaver pelts back to the eastern market. Watch as settlers build towns and eventually cities on the shores of the Great Lakes. Listen to the stories of sailors, lighthouse keepers, and shipping agents whose livelihoods depended on the dangerous waters of Lake Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Give an ear to their stories of unexpected tragedy and miraculous rescue, and heed their tales of risk and reward on the low seas. Great Ships also tells the story of sea battles and gunships, of the first vessels to travel beyond the Niagara, and of the treacherous storms and cold weather that caused thousands of ships to sink in the Great Lakes. Watch as underwater archaeologists solve the mysteries of Great Lakes shipwrecks today. And learn how the shift from sail to steam forever changed the history of shipping, as schooners made way for steamships and bulk freighters, and sailing became a recreation, not a hazardous way of life. Designed for the upper elementary classroom with emphasis on Michigan and Wisconsin, Great Ships on the Great Lakes includes a timeline of events, on-page vocabulary, and a list of resources and places to visit. Over 20 maps highlight the region’s maritime history. The accompanying Teacher’s Guide includes 18 classroom activities, arranged by chapter, including lessons on exploring shipwrecks and learning how glaciers moved across the landscape.

Synopsis Down to the Sea in Ships by : Horatio Clare

'Magnificent' Robert Macfarlane Winner of the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year Our lives depend on shipping but it is a world which is largely hidden from us. In every lonely corner of every sea, through every night, every day, and every imaginable weather, tiny crews of seafarers work the giant ships which keep landed life afloat. These ordinary men live extraordinary lives, subject to dangers and difficulties we can only imagine, from hurricanes and pirates to years of confinement in hazardous, if not hellish, environments. Horatio Clare joins two container ships on their epic voyages across the globe and experiences unforgettable journeys. As the ships cross seas of history and incident, seafarers unfold the stories of their lives, and a beautiful and terrifying portrait of the oceans and their human subjects emerges. Synopsis Ocean Bound Women: Sisters Sailing Around The World In The 1880s - The Adventures-the Ship-the People by : Anders Hallengren

Ocean Bound Women is an intriguing first-hand narrative of circumnavigating the globe in the 1880s. Based on family documents stored in a seaman's chest, this book provides a scholarly account of the history of the Swedish sailing-ship Atlantic (1876-1911) and her crew.Part of the book is based upon a diary written by a Scandinavian woman, which stands as the uniting text for the years 1885-1887, connecting the reader to all events in the chronicle. Other sources consist of manuscripts, documents and accounts collected from family descendants along with oral traditions and personal memories—all hitherto unpublished. This is a touching life story of two motherless sisters who took on a ship in their teens: a book about life on the oceans and meeting with people of many different nations.

Synopsis People, Ships, and the Sea by : Anja Veronika Maria Krieger

My dissertation contributes to current debates about the mechanisms of seafaring from the Late Bronze Age to the Classical Period. A lot of research dealing with the maritime world and the evidence of shipwrecks is centered on abstract notions such as trade, networks, connectivity, or the movement of objects. On the one hand, such abstractions are useful and necessary, on the other hand, as a consequence, the people sailing the ships are often neglected. Based on the ship as a means of connectivity and the notion of a ship as a living and working environment, I am exploring two different approaches to using the rich evidence from shipwrecks and other related sources dealing with seafaring practices. One approach deals with the analysis of connectivity and movement, the other approach is a deeper engagement with people operating ships and their agency resulting in an archaeological and anthropological narrative about life on board.
