Synopsis Pathfinders for Christianity in Northern Nigeria (1862-1940) by : Emmanuel A. S. Egbunu

The rivers Niger and Benue come together at the heart of Nigeria on a map. Besides being a confluence of two great rivers, it also became the location of landmarks in Nigeria’s history, notably the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates. As it was also a confluence of various cultural clusters, the Niger-Benue confluence communities went through three phases of Western encounters: commercial, missionary, and colonial. These have combined to shape the sociopolitical profile of northern Nigeria in various ways. In particular, it is the cradle of Christianity in northern Nigeria. Yet social historians have often assessed all three foreign influences indiscriminately and overlooked the unique and fundamental impact of the missionary encounter in providing the treasured values that midwifed social stability in such a pluralistic and sometimes volatile environment. This study undertakes a separation of the strands and sheds light on the laudable initiatives and legacies of the missionaries to ensure more clear-minded interpretations.

Synopsis The Gods in Retreat by : Emefie Ikenga Metuh

A historical study of religion, and the causes, effects and responses to religious change in Nigeria. The contributors analyse growth in religion and offer explanations for the massive drift from traditional religions to Christianity and Islam during the colonial and post-colonial periods which resulted in Christian and Muslim groups each constituting over 40% of the entire African population, the most rapid growth in Islam and Christianity in any time in the history of Africa. They trace how these changes transformed traditional religions noting aspects of continuity and discontinuity within them; and assess the impact of the missionaries and conversion, urbanisation and Western education on these traditional religions. The study also considers the relationship between orthodox Islam, dominant in Northern Nigeria, and 'Ahmadiyya' Islam. It assesses the conflicts between different Muslim groups, and Muslims and Christians within the political context of Nigeria. First published in 1985, this is a timely re-issue providing the historical background, necessary to understanding the current issues in Nigeria today and their political impact.

Synopsis Cuisine and Culture by : Linda Civitello

Cuisine and Culture presents a multicultural and multiethnic approach that draws connections between major historical events and how and why these events affected and defined the culinary traditions of different societies. Witty and engaging, Civitello shows how history has shaped our diet--and how food has affected history. Prehistoric societies are explored all the way to present day issues such as genetically modified foods and the rise of celebrity chefs. Civitello's humorous tone and deep knowledge are the perfect antidote to the usual scholarly and academic treatment of this universally important subject.

Synopsis The Great Second Advent Movement by : John Norton Loughborough

There are already many useful books in the hands of the people, and my apology for adding another to the list, is that in these pages I state many things concerning Adventist, and especially Seventh-day Adventist, which have not heretofore been brought in this form before the people. Besides this, many who espoused the cause in later years, and who have not witnessed the things mentioned, have earnestly requested a narration of these facts and experiences from those earlier in the work. Having been familiar with the advent movement in 1843 and 1844, and having, since Jane. 2, 1849 proclaimed the doctrine, first as an Adventist, I esteem it a pleasure to "speak the things i have seen and heard."--Chapter I-- Introductory. Chapter II-- The Plan of Salvation Unfolded. Chapter III-- The Coming of the Promised Seed. Chapter IV-- The Time of the End. Chapter V-- The Second Advent Message. Chapter VI-- The Message and the Messangers. Chapter VII-- The Rapid Advancement of the Message. Chapter VIII- The Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Chapter IX-- The Tarrying Time. Chapter X-- The Midnight Cry. Chapter XI --The Second Angel's Message. Chapter XII--The Disappointment--The Bitter Book. Chapter XIII--Tokens of Divine Guidance. Chapter XIV--The Shut Door. Chapter XV-- Increasing Light and Greater Wonders. Chapter XVI--The Third Angel's Message. ChapterXVII--Truth Advanced Under Difficulties. Chapter XVIII--Providence of God in the Publishing Work. Chapter XIX-- "By Their Fruits Ve Shall Know Them". Chapter XX-- Sacrifices in the Early Work. Chapter XXI--The Guiding Hand in the Work. Chapter XXII-Organization. Chapter XXIII--Health Institutions. Chapter XXIV--Other Prediction Fulfilled. Chapter XXV--Educational Institutions. Chapter XXVI--Our Foreign Missions. Chapter XXVII--Other Testimonies Confirmed. Chapter XXVIII--A Door That No Man Can Shut

The computer-based shelflist files are being maintained on a continuing basis so that updated editions of volumes in the series can be published as the need arises.
