Papers originally presented at a symposium on the Middle Paleolithic of Europe and the Near East, organized as part of the annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology in the spring of 1989. Paleolithic archaeology has entered a period in which new interpretations, based on new finds and revised ideas concerning previously known material, are competing with traditional interpretations. The approach of these papers is to evaluate the rapid environmental changes across the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary through its impact on human subsistence patterns. These patterns vary enormously in different regional areas and, in response to this, papers are drawn from Spain, Russia, Western Europe, the Levant, Mesopotamia, the Americas and Canada.
