Synopsis Ovid Amores II: A Selection by : Alfred Artley
This is the endorsed publication from OCR and Bloomsbury for the Latin A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Ovid's Amores, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary for Amores 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.10, 2.12. A detailed introduction covers the prescribed text to be read in English, placing the poems in their Roman literary context. Ovid's Amores represent the culmination of Roman love elegy, and the selection from Book II presented here shows the poet at the height of his literary and sexual powers. From dead parrots and eunuch slaves to the elusive mistress Corinna, Ovid teases and tantalises, deftly reworking themes and motifs from his elegiac predecessors to produce verse of effortless sophistication, wit and charm, poems that for the last two thousand years have scandalised and delighted readers in equal measure. Synopsis Selections from Ovid Amores II by : Alfred Artley
This is the first intermediate-student edition of a selection from Ovid's Amores. Poems 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.10, 2.12 are included as Latin text with an accompanying commentary and vocabulary. Focusing on a deliberately limited number of poems, this edition is designed to be manageable for students reading the text for the first time while also perfectly encapsulating the interest of Ovid's other work and inspiring further study of it. A detailed introduction explains points of historical and stylistic interest, including analysis of a further six poems: 2.1, 2.9 (both parts), 2.11, 2.15, 2.17, 2.18.

Synopsis Amores II by : Ovid
Ovid's personal love eloquies are arguably his most attractive work. Dr Booth offers a Latin text with parallel prose translation, and on each poem there is a critical essay written for the reader with little or no Latin.

Synopsis Ovid's Erotic Poems by : Ovid
The most sophisticated and daring poetic ironist of the early Roman Empire, Publius Ovidius Naso, is perhaps best known for his oft-imitated Metamorphoses. But the Roman poet also wrote lively and lewd verse on the subjects of love, sex, marriage, and adultery—a playful parody of the earnest erotic poetry traditions established by his literary ancestors. The Amores, Ovid's first completed book of poetry, explores the conventional mode of erotic elegy with some subversive and silly twists: the poetic narrator sets up a lyrical altar to an unattainable woman only to knock it down by poking fun at her imperfections. Ars Amatoria takes the form of didactic verse in which a purportedly mature and experienced narrator instructs men and women alike on how to best play their hands at the long con of love. Ovid's Erotic Poems offers a modern English translation of the Amores and Ars Amatoria that retains the irreverent wit and verve of the original. Award-winning poet Len Krisak captures the music of Ovid's richly textured Latin meters through rhyming couplets that render the verse as playful and agile as it was meant to be. Sophisticated, satirical, and wildly self-referential, Ovid's Erotic Poems is not just a wickedly funny send-up of romantic and sexual mores but also a sharp critique of literary technique and poetic convention.

Synopsis Advanced Latin by : Stephen Anderson
Advanced Latin offers a range of material to help students build and develop the knowledge and skills needed for A2 and Pre-U Latin. There are 24 translation/comprehension exercises, based on passages taken predominantly from Livy, Caesar and Ovid. These match exactly the requirements of A2, but the passages work equally well as unseens for those working towards Pre-U. Six further passages are offered for unseen translation only, and are designed to stretch the most able. There are then 12 passages of continuous prose for translation into Latin, each supported by notes to help the student; and an appendix that contains a comprehensive English-Latin vocabulary. To support the study of A2 and Pre-U literature, there are short commentaries on sample passages from each of the prescribed authors, demonstrating a variety of interpretative approaches. In addition, for each author there is an annotated bibliography, to guide both teacher and student to the most useful secondary literature available. A separate section focuses on the Pre-U unseen literary criticism option and offers six practice passages.

Synopsis Propertius, Tibullus and Ovid: A Selection of Love Poetry by : Anita Nikkanen
This is the OCR-endorsed publication from Bloomsbury for the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 3) prescription of Ovid's Amores 1.1 and 2.5, Propertius 1.1 and Tibullus 1.1 with the A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Ovid's Amores 2.7 and 2.8, Propertius 1.3 and 2.14 and Tibullus 1.3, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed text to be read in English for A Level. Propertius, Tibullus and Ovid are our three main writers of Latin love elegy. The selected poems depict the bitter-sweet love affairs of the poet-lovers and their mistresses, from the heartbreak of rejection to the elation at love reciprocated. While Propertius's and Ovid's setting is the city and their poems show us such details of urbane Roman life as drinking parties and elaborate hair-dressing, Tibullus introduces the idyll of the countryside to the genre. Their sophisticated poems combine intense emotion with wit and irony, and celebrate the life of love and their mistresses, Propertius's Cynthia, Tibullus's Delia and Nemesis, and Ovid's Corinna.
