Border regions around the new eastern and south-eastern edges of the European Union have seen the re-emergence of previous cultures and ethnicities. This has caused a reappraisal of people's relationship with history. Border-related institutions established at international, regional and local levels have endeavoured to make the border regions places of cultural encounter, providing a new way forward for future generations through new kinds of cooperation.

Why does the West rule? Obsolete old words from seventeenth-century English villages reflect the realities of working-class life, exhausting labor, dirt, bizarre foods, magic, horses, outrageous sexism, feudal duties. New words, first appearing in print 1650–1800, reflect a middle-class culture very different from an earlier courtly culture, interested in money, coffee-houses, and self-fulfillment. This book explores the relationship between diverse social movements and Marxist historical cultures during the second half of the twentieth century in Western Europe, with special emphasis on the Federal Republic of Germany and Italy.
