In 1835, the United States purchased close to one million acres of land from the Caddo Confederacy of Native Americans; the Louisiana portion became known as Caddo Parish. The Indian agency's protection of that land delayed the settlement of the parish for 25 years or more after it began in other parts of Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas. The Red River logjam that existed for a few hundred years backed up bayous, which in return created navigable streams and lakes. The uplands contained massive stands of virgin timbers and bountiful fruit, berries, fish, and game. The first land patents were sold in 1841, and by 1850, the area was known as Caddo Prairie. For a majority of the next 100 years, steamboat traffic, homesteaders, plantations, subsistence farmers, logging operations, entrepreneurs, and a building boom brought on by the railroad and oil industries uniquely melded to define local, cultural history. Today three towns and five villages are located in north Caddo Parish, while the memories of 10 historic communities remain strong.

"In this manuscript, Henry Alexander Wiencek takes a local approach to early twentieth-century domestic American energy production, what he calls "a gathering historical force" that was dramatically altering the economic, political, and social fabric of the United States. Prior to the boom, nearly three-quarters of the area's population was Black, with many rural tenant farmers working the same areas as their enslaved ancestors. But as oil created a lucrative new source of wages, racial violence became a way of ensuring the oil rigs--and the jobs they generated--would remain all white. On the other hand, oil did not naturally adhere to racial boundaries and at times was discovered under Black-owned lands, with complicated legal and social consequences that Wiencek explores via compelling case studies"--

Between the end of the 19th century and the present day, roughly 2,000 postcards were produced depicting scenes and landmarks in the city of Shreveport and the surrounding area. Most of these were made and distributed during the golden age of postcards, from approximately 1905 through the 1920s.
