Synopsis Maritime Law and Practice in Nigeria by : Dr. Collins O. Chijioke
About the Book Paucity of literature in the area of maritime law in Nigeria was what motivated the author to embark on this project and as such this book is the authors attempt to contribute to the bridging of the gap in knowledge in this area of the law. This book is written in simple and understandable English to ensure fluidity of reading. It is presented in such a way as to provide information in the areas of commercial law, carriage of goods by sea, maritime law as well as practical steps in maritime law litigation and related actions. Particular consideration has been given to the study of carriage of dangerous goods by sea, a subject which existing legal literature in Nigeria merely mentioned in passing. Suffice it to say that this book is the first Nigerian legal literature that has explored that subject, taking into consideration our domestic laws and international treaties; most of which are yet to be ratified and domesticated in Nigeria. Though the work has Nigeria as its geographical location it has discussed the subject with comparative analysis of contemporary development in some areas of maritime law; with special reference to the United Kingdom and the United States. It is the authors belief that this book, apart from providing practical guide to maritime litigation in Nigeria, would also serve as veritable tool for teaching and studying of maritime law and related courses in Nigerian Universities and other territory institutions and would be immeasurably useful to legal practitioners, members of the bench an research fellows. Synopsis Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims by : Patrick Griggs
This fourth edition addresses certain developments, including the 1996 Protocol to the 1976 Limitation Convention, which have come into effect since publication of the previous edition. The chapters on limitation of liability for passenger claims and in relation to the carriage of goods have been updated, as has the chapter on limitation regimes worldwide. The book also focuses upon the practicalities of seeking to limit by reference to case law and procedural rules.

Synopsis Nigerian Legal Methods by : C. C. Ohuruogu
This text is a collection of writings on assigned topics by some scholars and lecturers in the Faculty of Law at Benson Idahosa University and those invited from outside the university. The idea to write a text for use in the study of legal methods for law students was borne out of the desire to present a range of updated material in this area of study. The focus of this text is Nigeria. The book is written in simple, easy-to-understand language, and meant essentially for law students in the first year of the five year course in Law, as structured by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Nevertheless, persons who are in need of information or education on different aspects of the Nigerian legal process will also find aspects of the text useful. The contributors come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, which is reflected in their styles of presentation. However, each has endeavoured to present the assigned topic in such a form as to enhance comprehension by the primary beneficiaries. The inclusion of chapters on advocacy and mooting skills, as well as examination skills and strategies, makes this text unique, and allows it to offer more detailed analysis than existing texts in Nigeria provide.

Synopsis Maritime Cabotage Law by : Aniekan Akpan
This is the most comprehensive review of maritime cabotage law. It introduces the new theory of Developmental Sovereignty to jurisprudence. The maritime cabotage law provisions and approaches as adopted in many states and jurisdictions has been extensively scrutinised. This book challenges the established and accepted wisdom surrounding maritime cabotage by presenting new reasoning on the underpinning principles of the concept of maritime cabotage law. The book offers a vibrant discussion on the adjustment in the regulatory approaches of maritime cabotage, from one that was intrinsically premised on the idea of national sovereignty, to one that now embraces the broader ideology of development. It investigates what the common understanding of the law of maritime cabotage should be and on what intellectual basis it can be justified. It reduces the inconsistencies and confusion that surround the concept and application of maritime cabotage law, to provide a more certain and more robust concept of maritime cabotage.

Synopsis Elements of Cabotage Law in Nigeria by : Obafemi Ademola Adekola
A thorough examination of the recent economic (mis-)fortunes of Nigeria, the so-called giant of Africa, would reveal the unrealistic economic practice of depending on one major resource to fund the running of government, economic growth, and infrastructural development. This impractical approach to the management of the economy is magnified by the fact that Nigeria, as a country, is put in a precarious situation whenever there is a temporal or permanent price decline in the global crude oil market as this automatically translates to a reduction of the revenue available to government. This work is an attempt to present discussions into developing a Long-term and Strategic Economic Development Module for all regions and government in Nigeria. It is aimed at exposing Nigeria and Nigerians to the numerous benefits accruable in the development of its indigenous maritime economy. An attempt is made here to empirically rationalize the diversification of the Nigerian economy with its recent cabotage policies forming the foundation of an economy that emphasizes on shipping and associated mining and agricultural industries for the majority of its revenue. In order to justify this position, we undertake a careful analysis of the business histories of credible shipping companies like the precolonial Elder Dempster line and also the fast-growing Chinese auto manufacturing industries with a view to magnify their successes worthy of emulation. We have also compared some aspects of the US internal maritime structure with that of Nigeria and have exposed the practice of Japan in developing regions through the establishment of sea ports. It is intended that this book would serve as a personal and patriotic contribution to the Heads of Government as they strategize the reestablishment of Nigeria as the brightest investment destination in the global economic horizon in a bid to spark the recognition of our great nation as an emerging giant in the World Economic Order.
