Inhaltsangabe:Zusammenfassung: Der Nachrichtenfluss von Entwicklungs- zu Industrieländern wird seit Jahrzehnten heftig debattiert. Auch den britischen Medien wird eine unausgewogene Auslandsberichterstattung vorgeworfen, die ein verzerrtest Bild der Realität zeigt. Diese Arbeit analysiert die Nachrichten über Lateinamerika in der britischen Presse und richtet dabei besondere Aufmerksamkeit auf die Autoren der Artikel und darauf, wer über Lateinamerika zu Worte kommt. In welchem Maße sich Einheimische in den britischen Zeitungen Gehör verschaffen können wird dabei ebenso behandelt wie die Bedeutung von alternativen Quellen (z.B. andere Nachrichtenagenturen als die Großen Drei ). Die Gründe für redaktionelle Entscheidungen (wie z.B. der Einsatz von festen Korrespondenten anstelle von eingeflogenen Reportern, oder die Wahl der Nachrichtenagenturen) und journalistische Praktiken werden außerdem untersucht. Die folgenden Fragen sollen beantwortet werden: - Welches Bild vermittelt die britische Presse von Lateinamerika? - Auf welchem Wege fließen die Nachrichten von Lateinamerika zur britischen Presse? Wer schreibt sie? - Welche Informationsquellen werden genutzt, welche vernachlässigt? Wird Einheimischen und alternativen Quellen Gehör verschafft? Auf der Grundlage einer Inhaltsanalyse von fünf britischen broadsheet Zeitungen und Interviews mit britischen Korrespondenten in Lateinamerika sowie Lateinamerikanern, die in Großbritannien leben, weist diese Arbeit nach, dass viele der Bedenken, die vor 25 Jahren in den Debatten über globale Nachrichtenflüsse zum Ausdruck gebracht wurden, noch immer Relevanz haben. Obwohl sich viele Journalisten darum bemühen, dies zu ändern, tragen verschiedene Faktoren noch immer dazu bei, dass sie es meist nicht schaffen, die Öffentlichkeit mit ausgewogenen Berichten über Geschehnisse und Prozesse in Lateinamerika zu versorgen, die frei von Stereotypen sind und sich auf eine Vielzahl von Informationsquellen stützen. How social movements of the past and present are shaping Latin American politics today These are uncertain times in Latin America. Popular faith in democracy has been shaken; traditional political parties and institutions are stagnating, and there is a growing right-wing extremism overtaking some governments. Yet, in recent years, autonomous social movements have multiplied and thrived. This book presents voices of these movement protagonists themselves, as they describe the major issues, conflicts, and campaigns for social justice in Latin America today. Latin America Bureau, a London-based, independent organization providing news and analysis on the region, spoke to people from fourteen countries, from Mexico to the Southern Cone. The book captures the voices indigenous activists, fighting oil drilling in their homelands; mothers from favelas seeking justice for their children killed by police; opponents of large-scale mining projects; independent journalists working, at great personal risk, to expose corruption and human rights violations; women and LGBT people confronting violence and discrimination; and students demanding their right to a free, universal and high-quality education system. Though their locations and causes are disparate, these people and their movements share learning and activism, and their cooperation helps to link the movements across national borders. Voices of Latin America is essential reading for students, travelers, journalists—anyone with an interest in social justice movements in Latin America.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Academic studies generally paint a very positive picture of the alternative news agency Inter Press Service (IPS). It has frequently been demonstrated that unlike the big commercial agencies IPS provides descriptions of complex processes rather than spot news , informs about positive developments rather than the crisis-reporting that tends to prevail in the mainstream media, and succeeds in reporting from the perspective of developing countries and of people who do not usually get to speak in the news. An analysis of whether a news agency with such laudable intentions actually has the power to contribute to social change appears to be lacking, although IPS marginal status in the mediascape has been pointed out. Against that background, this study investigates the role of IPS as alternative in the mediascape based on IPS coverage of the Fifth World Social Forum (WSF), which took place in Porto Alegre (Brazil) in January 2005. The field research for this study was conducted during an internship at the IPS Latin America office in Montevideo (Uruguay) and at the World Social Forum, where the author was part of the IPS news team. Considering IPS extensive coverage of the WSF and the fact that civil society constitutes IPS major audience as well as being the key protagonist at the WSF, both the Forum and civil society are regarded important aspects to this analysis. The author presupposes the importance of the WSF for global social movements, and the need both for a diversity of sources that inform the public about the event and the issues discussed there, and for alternatives in the rather homogeneous media sector. The following questions guide the analysis: a. How does the IPS coverage of the 2005 WSF differ from that by mainstream media? b. Does IPS contribute to social change? c. Is IPS an important information source and platform for civil society organisations? Following a brief introduction, the theoretical concepts central to the analysis are outlined by describing imbalances of the international news environment, explaining the notion of news values, and looking into theories on media effects. National borders and transnational forces have been central in defining the meaning of race in the Americas. Race and Transnationalism in the Americas examines the ways that race and its categorization have functioned as organizing frameworks for cultural, political, and social inclusion—and exclusion—in the Americas. Because racial categories are invariably generated through reference to the “other,” the national community has been a point of departure for understanding race as a concept. Yet this book argues that transnational forces have fundamentally shaped visions of racial difference and ideas of race and national belonging throughout the Americas, from the late nineteenth century to the present.
