Synopsis John Law by : Antoin E. Murphy

John Law (1671-1729) left a remarkable legacy of economic concepts from a time when economic conceptualization was very much at an embryonic stage. Yet he is best known-and generally dismissed-today as a rake, duellist, and gambler. This intellectual biography offers a new approach to Law, one that shows him to have been a significant economic theorist with a vision that he attempted to implement as policy in early-eighteenth-century Europe. Law's style, marked by a clarity and use of modern terminology, stands out starkly against the turgid prose of many of his contemporaries. His vision of a monetary and financial system was certainly one of a later age, for Law believed in an economy of banknotes and credit where specie had no role to play. Ultimately Law failed as a policy-maker, in part because of the entrenchment of the financiers and their aristocratic backers and in part because of theoretical flaws in his vision. His struggle for power took place against the background of Europe's first major stock boom and collapse. The collapse of the Mississippi System, which he had conceived, and the South Sea Bubble led to a lasting impression of Law as a failure. It is this impression that Antoin Murphy seeks to dispel.

Synopsis Czechoslovakia Behind the Curtain by : Thomas K. Murphy

During the Cold War, the West--especially in the popular media--tended to view communism as a monolithic phenomenon, with little variation throughout the Eastern Bloc. Yet culture and geography contributed to social diversity among and within communist systems. Drawing on interviews with approximately 100 Czechs and Slovaks, the author provides new perspectives on day-to-day life in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. Their recollections paint a more complex picture of the life on the other side of the Iron Curtain, from the Sputnik era reforms of the early 1960s, through the tumult of the 1968 Prague Spring and the subsequent Soviet invasion, to the Velvet Revolution, the collapse of the communist regime and the formation of democratic Czechoslovakia in 1989.

Synopsis International Law Relating to Islands by : Sean D. Murphy

This monograph considers the application of general rules of international law to islands, as well as special rules focused on islands, notably Article 121 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Such rules have been applied in several landmark cases in recent years, including the International Court of Justice’s judgments in Territorial and Maritime Dispute (Nicaragua v. Colombia), and arbitral awards in the Chagos Marine Protected Area Arbitration (Mauritius v. United Kingdom) and the South China Sea Arbitration (Philippines v. China). Among other things, this monograph explores: the legal concepts of “islands”, “rocks” and “low-tide elevations”; methods of securing sovereignty over and the maritime zones generated by islands; islands and historic titles, bays and rights; problems of delimitation in the presence of islands; legal issues arising from changes in islands over time (notably from climate change); and contemporary techniques for resolving disputes over islands.

Navy SEAL Tony Vlachic meets out gay actor Adam Wyndham at the end of 2007’s All Through the Night and sparks fly... Navy SEAL Tony Vlachic has kept his sexual orientation a secret for years under the threat of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” That is, until he meets Adam Wyndham, a charismatic yet troubled movie star. Tony knows he’s risking his military career when he approaches Adam in front of his SEAL teammates. And Adam, nursing a broken heart, has no interest in a relationship. Still, neither man can deny their instant attraction. Tony didn’t become a SEAL by accepting rejection, and his pursuit of Adam leads to one unforgettable night. But the next morning, Tony is ordered to ship out to Afghanistan with SEAL Team Sixteen, and he’s forced to leave Adam with too much unsaid. As Tony enters a dangerous war zone, Adam has to choose between keeping the home fires burning, or taking a blowtorch, igniting the hope of a new relationship with a perfect-for-him man, and burning it all to the ground. When Tony is injured, the two men must face their feelings for each other. With a little help from some friends—Tony’s SEAL teammates of Izzy, Jenk, Lopez, and Gillman, and Adam’s longtime frenemy, Troubleshooters operative Sam Starrett—they must decide if what they’ve found together is worth risking even more than their hearts. (Around 19K words or 80 pages) MURPHY'S LAW: Annotated reissue originally e-published in March 2001 A Navy SEAL short story Jim Murphy and Andrea Patterson attend the same high school, but they don’t meet until days before Andi leaves for college and Jim joins the Navy. But it’s never too late to start again, as Andi finds out when she comes up against Jim’s upbeat, revised version of Murphy’s Law. (Around 7500 words or 20 pages) All three stories, combined, are around 38,000 words or 200 pages.
