Synopsis Soil Science by : Michael T. Aide

Soil Science - Emerging Technologies, Global Perspectives and Applications describes recent research that illustrates the universal importance of understanding soil and soil’s relationship to environmental stewardship and food security. Research supporting emerging technologies provides abilities to discern key soil attributes that influence soil behavior and development, understand soil biology to create sustainable land management, and sequester carbon to partially negate climate change. Soil science is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that must consider resource allocation and social needs to foster a culture that protects and secures not only soil health but also water and air quality. Chapters in this book reflect the diversity of modern thinking within the discipline of soil science, but collectively illustrate that global sustainability of food, the environment, and biological diversity are critical to future generations.

Synopsis The Heart of the Pearl Shell by : James F. Weiner

For the Foi people who live on the edge of the central highlands of Papua New Guinea, the flow of pearl shells is the "heart" of their social life. The pearl shell is the exchange item that mediates the creation of their most important sexual and social roles. The Heart of the Pearl Shell analyzes a number of myths of the Foi people, elegantly bringing together significant ethnographic materials in a way that has important implications for the development of social theory in anthropology and in Melanesian studies. Scholars of semiotic-symbolic anthropology and of comparative religion will also share the author's interest in the meaning and role of mythology in Foi culture. Instead of relying on orthodox methods of Freudian or structuralist interpretation, James Weiner assumes there is a dialectical relationship between the images of Foi myth and the images of the Foi's social world. He demonstrates how each set of these images is dependent upon the other for its creation. This innovative study locates Foi social meaning in the re-creation and attempted solution of the moral dilemmas that are crystallized in mythology and other poetic usages. Synopsis Culicipedia by : Ralph E Harbach

This unique volume is a comprehensive compilation of all scientific names introduced at all levels of classification within the Culicipedia family since the official start of zoological nomenclature. The work is largely a lexicon aimed at being historical and informative as well as nomenclatural and bibliographic. Unlike catalogues, it contains sections devoted separately to the groups of names regulated by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, the species, genus and family groups, as well as sections concerned with names derived from personal and geographical names and other sources. In addition to insights into the history of mosquito classification, attention given to the formation, Latinization and derivation of names makes the work a crucial contribution to mosquito science
