Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society, including the very poor, and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. Gaskell was also the first to write a biography of Charlotte Bronte, The Life of Charlotte Bronte, which was published in 1857. In this book: North and South Wives and Daughters Cranford

History meets memoir in two irresistible true-life romances--one set in 19th century Rome, one in present-day Paris and London--linked by a bond between women writers a hundred years apart. In 2013, graduate student Nell Stevens toils away on a dissertation about artistic and literary circles in nineteenth-century Rome. Bored with academia and thrown off after falling for a soulful American screenwriter living in Paris, she finds herself drawn to the biography of English novelist Elizabeth Gaskell who, in 1857, left her dull minister husband behind in England and set off with her daughters on a transformative trip to Rome. There she met a dazzling group of artists and writers, including the American critic Charles Eliot Norton. Seventeen years her junior, Norton was Gaskell's one true love. They could not be together--the affair would have been an unthinkable breach. But by his side in Rome, Mrs. Gaskell knew she had reached the "tip-top point" of her life. Could this indomitable Victorian author help modern-day Nell salvage her foundering pursuit of love, family and a writing career? History meets memoir in this vibrant, witty, and hugely original literary chronicle of two women, each charting a way of life beyond the rules of her time.

Gaskell's works often explore social issues, class differences, and the plight of women in society, depicted through vivid characters and engaging plotlines. Her writing style is characterized by its deep emotional resonance, nuanced character development, and insightful social commentary. This collection includes popular novels like 'North and South' and 'Cranford,' as well as shorter works and novellas that highlight Gaskell's versatility as a writer. Gaskell's works are essential reading for those interested in Victorian literature, feminist perspectives, and the social issues of the 19th century. Elizabeth Gaskell, a contemporary of Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bronte, drew inspiration from her own experiences as a minister's wife and keen observer of society. Her background in social activism and philanthropy informs her writing, as she sheds light on the struggles of the working class and marginalized groups. Gaskell's empathetic approach to storytelling and keen insight into human nature have secured her a place in the literary canon. I highly recommend 'The Complete Works of Elizabeth Gaskell (Illustrated)' to readers who appreciate classic literature, feminist themes, and engrossing storytelling. Gaskell's timeless tales continue to resonate with readers today, offering valuable insights into the complexities of human relationships and societal norms.

Cranford is the best-known novel of the 19th century English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. It was first published in 1851 as a serial in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Charles Dickens. The fictional town of Cranford is closely modelled on Knutsford in Cheshire, which Mrs Gaskell knew well. The book has little in the way of plot and is more a series of episodes in the lives of Mary Smith and her friends, Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two spinster sisters. The "major" event in the story is the return to Cranford of their long-lost brother, Peter, which in itself is only a minor portion of the work, leaving the rest of the novel at a low-key tone.

Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences-biographical, historical, and literary-to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. In 1855 Charlotte Bronte, pregnant and married less than a year, fell ill and died of tuberculosis-the same disease that had killed her sisters and brother. Two years after Charlotte's death, her friend Elizabeth Gaskell, herself a well-known novelist, completed work on The Life of Charlotte Bronte, a biography that was met with immediate acclaim by readers curious to discover more about the enigmatic author of Jane Eyre. Both a work of art and a well-documented interpretation of its subject, Gaskell's biography is an extraordinarily vividand sensitive account of Bronte's outer and inner lives: her shyness and strangeness; her intense appreciation of the Bible, poetry, music, and the theater; her love of her family; and her fears of loneliness. Meant to be a defense and vindication of a noble, true, and tender woman, the book paints Bronte as an unforgettable figure careening between depression and exaltation. It also portrays her suffering. In her personal life, Bronte knew deprivation and loss, while in her artistic life, despite her fame, she had been taunted as coarse and had none of the advantages that a man might take for granted. A powerful tribute from one writer to another, The Life of Charlotte Bronte remains one of the most evocative and perceptive biographies ever written. Anne Taranto was educated at Columbia and Oxford Universities and at Yale University, where she earned a Ph.D. She has taught courses on the novel and on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature at Georgetown University and is currently at work on a study of Charlotte Bront?'s relationship to the literary marketplace.
