Synopsis Mother Murphy's Law by : Bruce Lansky
A Brief Interview With Mother Murphy, Himself Q. How did you come up with the idea for Mother Murphy's Law? Mother Murphy: I spend a lot of time with my children, and it seems that something is always going wrong. I used to think I was a klutzy daddy...then it dawned on me: 1. When I was a kid, everything my parents did was wrong. 2. Now that I'm a parent, everything I do is wrong. Q. What does Mother Murphy's Law explain? Mother Murphy: The book is pretty much a catalog of things that can go wrong as you have and raise kids. For example: If most of the baby shower gifts you receive are blue, your baby will be a girl. Your baby's diaper is wet moments after you've changed her into a clean one...and leakproof diapers aren't. your toddler knocks on your bedroom door the moment you're about to have sex...or barges in unannounced at the peak of passion. Any food that's good for your child is "yukky"...and any food that's loaded with sugar, salt and fat is "yummy." Anything you say or do when you're with your teenager in public will embarrass him.

Synopsis One for the Murphys by : Lynda Mullaly Hunt
From the author of the New York Times bestselling novel Fish in a Tree! Carley uses humor and street smarts to keep her emotional walls high and thick. But the day she becomes a foster child, and moves in with the Murphys, she's blindsided. This loving, bustling family shows Carley the stable family life she never thought existed, and she feels like an alien in their cookie-cutter-perfect household. Despite her resistance, the Murphys eventually show her what it feels like to belong--until her mother wants her back and Carley has to decide where and how to live. She's not really a Murphy, but the gifts they've given her have opened up a new future. "Hunt's writing is fearless and One For The Murphys is a story that is at once compassionate, thought-provoking and beautifully told. From the first page, I was drawn into Carley's story. She is a character not to be missed or forgotten." —Jacqueline Woodson, National Book Award-winning author of Brown Girl Dreaming Winner of the Tassy Walden Award for New Voice in Children's Literature

Synopsis Murphy's Laws of Combat by : Marion F. Sturkey
Modern-day warriors who desire to stay alive in battle should heed "Murphy's Laws of Combat" - hilarious because of their inherent truths. Plus, readers may study Murphy's time-tested beer drinking guide and the analysis of Politically Correct Disease. The book concludes with a serious look at the military heritage of the U.S. Armed Forces. This popular and expanded "second edition" has been reprinted time after time.

Synopsis A History of Murphy's Law by : Nick T. Spark
Murphy's Law is one of the most well-recognized statements of philosophy known to man. Tipped off by his next door neighbor that Murphy may have worked at Edwards Air Force Base, and that the Law may have come into being after a rocket sled experiment went awry, author Nick T. Spark beings a Quixotic quest to learn the truth. His attempts to pin down the mysterious origins of The Law and to answer the eternal question, "Who was Murphy and what is the true meaning of Murphy's Law?" are both amusing and relevatory. Read it, and find out why everything you ever thought you knew about Murphy's Law -- is wrong.

Synopsis When Half Is Whole by : Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu
"I listen and gather people's stories. Then I write them down in a way that I hope will communicate something to others, so that seeing these stories will give readers something of value. I tell myself that this isn't going to be done unless I do it, just because of who I am. It's a way of making my mark, leaving something behind . . . not that I'm planning on going anywhere right now." So explains Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu in this touching, introspective, and insightful examination of mixed race Asian American experiences. The son of an Irish American father and Japanese mother, Murphy-Shigematsu uses his personal journey of identity exploration and discovery of his diverse roots to illuminate the journeys of others. Throughout the book, his reflections are interspersed among portraits of persons of biracial and mixed ethnicity and accounts of their efforts to answer a seemingly simple question: Who am I? Here we meet Norma, raised in postwar Japan, the daughter of a Japanese woman and an American serviceman, who struggled to make sense of her ethnic heritage and national belonging. Wei Ming, born in Australia and raised in the San Francisco of the 1970s and 1980s, grapples as well with issues of identity, in her case both ethnic and sexual. We also encounter Rudy, a "Mexipino"; Marshall, a "Jewish, adopted Korean"; Mitzi, a "Blackinawan"; and other extraordinary people who find how connecting to all parts of themselves also connects them to others. With its attention on people who have been regarded as "half" this or "half" that throughout their lives, these stories make vivid the process of becoming whole.
