Synopsis Biomedical Applications by : Stojan S. Djokić

Various metallic or non-metallic surfaces are frequently treated by elewctrochemical methods (e.g. electrodeposition, electroless deposition, anodization, passivation, etc.) in order to achieve a desirable property important for biomedical applications. Applications include orthopedic or dental implants, dressings for wound healing and different skin diseases, surfaces for the prevention of bio-film formation of corrosion inhibition in biological media. The aim of this issue of Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry is to review the latest developments of the surface treatments for biomedical applications in relation to electrochemical science and technology. This new volume of Modern Aspect of Electrochemistry brings to the scientists, engineers and students summarized results and new concepts of surface treatments for the biomedical applications which may have significant influence for the future practical applications.

Synopsis Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry by : John O M. Bockris

This volume contains five chapters covering four topics of current research interest: splitting of water, lithium batteries, intercalation, and fundamental aspects of electrode processes. Two chapters are devoted to splitting of water. The first chapter, by Gutmann and Murphy, presents a comprehensive review of the classical methods of splitting water by electrolysis and also presents some novel techniques for splitting water. Chapter 2, by Gratzel, surveys the current research being done on water splitting using visible light. Two chapters are included that deal with the timely topics of lithium batteries and intercalation. The first, Chapter 3 by Marincic, presents a practical guide to the recent development of lithium batteries, while the second, Chapter 4 by McKinnon and Haering, presents and discusses various theoretical approaches to inter calation. The last chapter in the book, Chapter 5 by Khan, presents a survey of many of the fundamental concepts and misconceptions of electrode kinetics as applied to semiconductors in particular.

Synopsis Electrolytes for Lithium and Lithium-Ion Batteries by : T. Richard Jow

Electrolytes for Lithium and Lithium-ion Batteries provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific understanding and technological development of electrolyte materials in the last several years. This book covers key electrolytes such as LiPF6 salt in mixed-carbonate solvents with additives for the state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries as well as new electrolyte materials developed recently that lay the foundation for future advances. This book also reviews the characterization of electrolyte materials for their transport properties, structures, phase relationships, stabilities, and impurities. The book discusses in-depth the electrode-electrolyte interactions and interphasial chemistries that are key for the successful use of the electrolyte in practical devices. The Quantum Mechanical and Molecular Dynamical calculations that has proved to be so powerful in understanding and predicating behavior and properties of materials is also reviewed in this book. Electrolytes for Lithium and Lithium-ion Batteries is ideal for electrochemists, engineers, researchers interested in energy science and technology, material scientists, and physicists working on energy.

Synopsis Electrochemical Activation of Catalysis by : Costas G. Vayenas

I knew nothing of the work of C. G. Vayenas on NEMCA until the early nineties. Then I learned from a paper of his idea (gas interface reactions could be catalyzed electrochemically), which seemed quite marvelous; but I did not understand how it worked. Consequently, I decided to correspond with Professor Vayenas in Patras, Greece, to reach a better understanding of this concept. I think that my early papers (1946, 1947, and 1957), on the relationship between the work function of metal surfaces and electron transfer reactions thereat to particles in solution, held me in good stead to be receptive to what Vayenas told me. As the electrode potential changes, so of course, does the work function at the interface, and gas metal reactions there involve adsorbed particles which have bonding to the surface. Whether electron transfer is complete in such a case, or whether the effect is on the desorption of radicals, the work function determines the strength of their bonding, and if one varies the work function by varying the electrode potential, one can vary the reaction rate at the interface. I got the idea. After that, it has been smooth sailing. Dr. Vayenas wrote a seminal article in Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry, Number 29, and brought the field into the public eye. It has since grown and its usefulness in chemical catalytic reactions has been demonstrated and verified worldwide.

Synopsis A Guide to Problems in Modern Electrochemistry 1 by : Maria E. Gamboa-Aldeco

It has been always an incentive for students to find whether his/her efforts to solve exercises give correct results, or to find tips for problems that he/she finds more difficult. These are the main reasons for the appearance of the present book. As part of the textbook Modern Electrochemistry 1: Ionics, A Guide to Problems in Modern Electrochemistry: Part 1: Ionics compiles many of the solutions to the exercises and problems presented in the text, as well as many new problems.
