Excerpt from The Kingdom of Heaven The aim of this volume is practical. Every preacher and teacher has to face the question - What is the Gospel? Jesus began His ministry by proclaiming the advent of the Kingdom of Heaven. It is, therefore, a matter of paramount importance to ascertain the significance of the Kingdom in His teaching. This has been one of the main subjects of theological inquiry during recent years. There are still wide divergencies of interpretation, but there is a growing recognition that neither the 'evolutionary' nor the 'catastrophic' elements in our Lord's teaching can be explained away, if justice is done to the records. I have striven, in these pages, to present both aspects impartially, and to show how they are related to one another. The subject is approached in the light of the critical study of the Gospels, but with a desire to avoid the subjectivity which is so often the bane of the critical method. A theme on which so much has been written offers little scope for originality. I venture, however, to cherish the hope that the presentation of the material may help some of those who are engaged in the practical work of preaching and teaching to a better understanding of the central message of our Lord's ministry. Excerpt from What Is the Kingdom of Heaven? I hope that in this book I may not seen to express a greater hostility to Christian orthodoxy than I feel. As I owe all that I most firmly believe to that orthodoxy, I should be ungrateful if I spoke of it with enmity or contempt. But orthodoxy can be living only if it is ready to confess that it may have made mistakes even on the most vital points. The mistake which I believe it has made, and which I try to point out in this book, is really one of emphasis. It would be easy to quote passages from Christian writers, all through the ages, against my contention that Christ's doctrine of the Kingdom of Heaven has been ignored. But these passages would not prove that any church has laid that emphasis on the doctrine which Christ Himself laid on it, or that there has been a sustained effort to understand the doctrine or to state it clearly and fully. The doctrine is not the centre of Christian thought and teaching; and in this book I contend that it ought to be. Every verse has been given its most obvious meaning; for most certainly the Lord knows how to express truth in the clearest way and He means what He says, and says exactly what He desired to say; and all twisting or strain ing of the Scriptures is insulting to God. Beware of the commentator who magnifies obscure truths, putting them in a place of great promlnence. God's light is not put under a bushel waiting for some visionary to lift it Off.
