Synopsis Magali Reus by : Magali Reus

This publication accompanies two exhibitions of recent sculptural work by the artist Magali Reus: "Hot Cottons" (2017-18) at Bergen Kunsthall and "As mist, description," (2018) at the South London Gallery. Featuring an essay by writer and curator Laura Mclean-Ferris and a poetic response by writer and poet Quinn Latimer as well as a fully illustrated overview of Reus's work, this catalogue provides an in-depth exploration of the artist's recent sculptural practice. Producing a sculptural language that is both familiar yet unlocatable Reus draws heavily on the past and present landscape of industry and fabrication, creating forms using a plethora of materials that include: mesh, jesmonite, cotton, steel, rubber, leather. Interested in collaborative processes of making, from virtual design to handmade fabrication, Reus combines sculptural games with material explorations. Everyday materials are transformed with powder blues, pastel greens, and dirty beiges. Reus's sculptures appear in a state of transition, in progress, mid-function, restored, or destroyed. Autographs of famous athletes, graphics from an iconic Norwegian matchbox, forms reminiscent of fire extinguishers, decorative ironwork, or modular frameworks, all feature in Reus's sculptures transforming defined materials into newly undefinable objects. Working with factories in Holland to develop specific fabrics, using complex molding and weaving techniques, all the while drawing on the language of digital design Reus navigates the contemporary post-industrial moment with playful unease, creating objects with familiar yet fluid identities. Synopsis Invisible Adversaries by : Johanna Fateman

The Hessel Museum of Art marks its tenth anniversary with a major exhibition of works from the Marieluise Hessel Collection curated by Lauren Cornell and Tom Eccles entitled Invisible Adversaries. The exhibition is inspired by the eponymous 1976 feature film by the radical Austrian artist VALIE EXPORT, and is built around its themes. The film presents a woman&#x;s struggle to retain her sense of self against hostile alien forces that appear increasingly ubiquitous, colonizing the minds of all those around her-- http://www.bard.edu/ccs/exhibitions/invisible-adversaries/

Synopsis Viking Art (Second) (World of Art) by : James Graham-Campbell

Updated to reflect recent archaeological discoveries and overflowing with color illustrations, this book is the definitive introduction to the art of the Viking Age. The Viking Age in Europe lasted from the time of the first major Viking expeditions in 800 CE to the widespread adoption of Christianity in Scandinavia some 300 years later. During that time, Viking art and culture spread across continental Europe and into the world beyond. Written by a leading authority on the subject, this book introduces readers to the intricate objects and beautiful art styles that developed during the Viking Age. Beginning with an introduction to the geographical and historical background of Viking culture, author James Graham-Campbell chronicles the six main styles of Viking art, examining how they emerged and interacted with one another, as well as how the religious shift from paganism to Christianity impacted Viking art and its legacy. More than 200 high-quality illustrations depict everything from delicate metalwork, elaborate wood carvings, ornate weapons, and fine jewelry to grand ships, the Gotland picture stones, and archaeological traces left by the Vikings around the Western world. Now revised and updated with recent archaeological discoveries, Viking Art is a perfect guide—including a timeline and maps—for all those interested in the arts of this vibrant and fascinating culture.

Synopsis Theater Objects by : Gianluigi Ricuperati

This beautifully illustrated book accompanies an exhibit at gta exhibitions of ETH Zurich that focuses on artworks featuring carefully designed stages--a deliberate blurring of the border between art, architecture, and performance. Creating static, yet theatrical, tableaux in which artists can highlight the interplay between the disciplines of art and architecture, the stages at the same time represent a wide range of creative approaches to art and art making, and they also offer reflections on sources of artistic inspiration, including books and films. A lasting record of a carefully--and creatively--curated exhibition, Theater Objects will surprise and impress architects, artists, and fans of both forms.

Synopsis Hito Steyerl: I Will Survive by : Hito Steyerl

A massive, long-overdue retrospective on the multimedia image critique of Hito Steyerl, influential artist and author of Duty-Free Artand The Wretched of the Screen Over the past 30 years, through video and installation, the immensely influential German artist and writer Hito Steyerl (born 1966) has been tracking the ways that images have mutated--from the analogue image and its manifold possibilities for montage to the fluidity of the split digital image--and the implications these mutations have had for the representation of wars, genocides and the flow of capital. "We are no longer dealing with the virtual but with a confusing and possibly alien concreteness that we are only beginning to understand," writes Brian Kuan Wood of the digital visual worlds that the artist presents. At nearly 500 pages, this book--the first substantial overview on Steyerl--looks at multimedia installations and film projects of the past ten years, as well as earlier works, all of which are united by the artist's unflagging interrogation of the politics of the image.
