Regional mental hospitals in India are perceived as colonial artefacts in need of reformation. In the last two decades, there has been discussion around the maltreatment of patients, corruption and poor quality of mental health treatment in these institutions. This ethnography scrutinizes the management of madness in one of these asylum-like institutions in the context of national change and the global mental health movement. The author explores the assembling and impact of psychiatric, bureaucratic, gendered and queer narratives in and around the hospital. Finally, the author attempts to reconcile social anthropology and psychiatry by scrutinising their divergent approaches towards ‘mad narratives’.

The nature and forms of violence against women arise from patriarchy- broadly defined as a system of male dominance, legitimated within the family and society through superior rights, privileges, authority and power. The degree to which this happens and the forms in which such power is exercised vary between cultures and societies. The process of subordination is generally achieved by devaluing women's contribution, while at the same time extracting significant contribution from them. The accounts of violence against women in the following thesis illustrate poignantly the conjunction of these processes. They also bring out the cultural specificity of some types of violence. Some avenues available to the victims of violence are through the courts of justice which are not immune to the prejudices of the social order and reflect the male bias of the system. A qualitative research design was used and data collected by doing a feminist ethnography which included interviews, participant observation and content analysis in Mumbai, India. What emerged from the data analysis was that in order to have an understanding of feminism as a validation of women's diverse realities, we must have an understanding of empowerment and how it can enhance our ability to control our own lives. Empowerment is a political activity that can range from individual acts of political resistance to mass political mobilization and is aimed at changing the nature and distribution of power in a society.

In Sexual States Jyoti Puri tracks the efforts to decriminalize homosexuality in India to show how the regulation of sexuality is fundamentally tied to the creation and enduring existence of the state. Since 2001 activists have attempted to rewrite Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which in addition to outlawing homosexual behavior is often used to prosecute a range of activities and groups that are considered perverse. Having interviewed activists and NGO workers throughout five metropolitan centers, investigated crime statistics and case law, visited various state institutions, and met with the police, Puri found that Section 377 is but one element of how homosexuality is regulated in India. This statute works alongside the large and complex system of laws, practices, policies, and discourses intended to mitigate sexuality's threat to the social order while upholding the state as inevitable, legitimate, and indispensable. By highlighting the various means through which the regulation of sexuality constitutes India's heterogeneous and fragmented "sexual state," Puri provides a conceptual framework to understand the links between sexuality and the state more broadly.
