Le bassin du Congo représente 70 % de la couverture forestière du continent africain et abrite une grande partie de la biodiversité de l’Afrique. Historiquement, la pression exercée sur les forêts du bassin du Congo a été comparativement faible, mais des signes indiquent que cette situation ne devrait pas durer, car la pression sur les forêts et les autres écosystèmes s’accroît. La reconnaissance croissante de l’importance des forêts pour endiguer le changement climatique a introduit un nouvel élan dans la lutte contre la déforestation et la dégradation de la forêt tropicale. La plupart des pays de bassin du Congo sont activement engagés dans un processus de préparation des cadres et stratégies-cadre capable de créer des incitations à « réduire les émissions dues à la déforestation et à la dégradation des forêts », encourageant « la conservation et la gestion durable des forêts ainsi que l’amélioration de la séquestration du carbone par les forêts » (REDD+). Ils travaillent ainsi d’ores-et-déjà à renforcer leur capacité de suivi des émissions liées aux forêts, à améliorer la gouvernance des forêts, à promouvoir le développement et à réduire la pauvreté, tout en protégeant les ressources naturelles de la région. Un exercice de deux ans visant à analyser et comprendre en profondeur la dynamique de la déforestation dans le bassin du Congo est résumé dans le présent rapport, qui s’organise comme suit : Le chapitre 1 donne une vue d’ensemble des forêts du bassin du Congo • Le chapitre 2 présente la dynamique de la déforestation et résume les résultats d’une analyse secteur par secteur des grands facteurs de déforestation dans le bassin du Congo. • Le chapitre 3 fournit une actualisation de l’état des négociations REDD+ dans le cadre de la CCNUCC et des implications pour les pays du bassin du Congo.

A pioneering collection of case studies on the global phenomenon of academic excellence initiatives and how they shape the performance of research universities. Academic excellence initiatives (AEIs)—special government-sponsored programs to improve research universities—have provided billions of dollars to top universities and represent perhaps the most significant effort in the past half-century to jumpstart academic research. The contributors to Academic Star Wars, superbly edited by Maria Yudkevich, Philip G. Altbach, and Jamil Salmi, analyze AEIs in nine European and Asian countries, including China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Denmark, France, Germany, and Russia, and offer penetrating insights into the successes and problems of these initiatives, as well as into the broader system of higher education itself. Academic Star Wars provides a comprehensive analysis of AEIs across the globe as it seeks to understand the impact of these programs on national higher ed systems. The contributors explore a host of topics, including how the idea of excellence varies across national systems; the lessons to be drawn from the most successful AEIs; the consequences of AEIs, both intended and unintended, for participating universities; and whether AEIs ensure a significant impact on the global standing of national higher education systems. Finally, the contributors offer policy recommendations for national decision-makers and university leaders, taking into account the variety of initial conditions of national higher education systems and the differences in AEI design, scope, and funding.

This book examines the experience of 11 universities in nine countries around the world that have grappled with the challenge of building successful research institutions in difficult circumstances and outlines key lessons of from this experience.

To honour the remarkable contribution of Michel David in the inception, establishment and development of Geostatistics, and to promote the essence of his work, an international Forum entitled Geostatistics for the Next Century was convened in Montreal in June 1993. In order to enhance communication and stimulate geostatistical innovation, research and development, the Forum brought together world leading researchers and practitioners from five continents, who discussed-debated current problems, new technologies and futuristic ideas. This volume contains selected peer-reviewed papers from the Forum, together with comments by participants and replies by authors. Although difficult to capture the spontaneity and range of a debate, comments and replies should further assist in the promotion of ideas, dialogue and criticism, and are consistent with the spirit of the Forum. The contents of this volume are organized following the Forum's thematic sessions. The role of theme sessions was not only to stress important topics of tOday but in addition, to emphasize common ground held among diverse areas of geostatistical work and the need to strengthen communication between these areas. For this reason, any given section of this book may include papers from theory to applications, in mining, petroleum, environment, geohydrology, image processing.
