Synopsis International Legal Protection of Wild Fauna and Flora by : P. van Heijnsbergen
The book covers that part of public international law that deals with the protection of wild fauna and flora and as such it is part of the concept of international environmental law. The book deals with international legal instruments, usually multilateral, which have as their main goal the protection of wild fauna and/or flora e.g. the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) of 1973 and the Convention on Biological Diversity of 1992. It provides a historical survey, an explanation of some terms and an analysis of the underlying values for nature protection. The substantive law discussed is divided into general international law and special international law. In the part on `general international law', the scarce principles of international law concerning problems of fauna and flora protection, such as the preservation principle and the common heritage principle are examined. In the part on special international law' the objects protected by that law such as species, genetic diversity, ecosystem and habitat is dealt with, as well as the concepts involved. The protection of the object `species' is divided into general protection of species and the special protection of threatened animals and plants. Finally, the part on adjective law deals with the implementation of the international law on wild fauna and flora and considers the different mechanisms of implementation contained in the international legal instruments concerned. The book is based on the author's lecturing experience in international public law during thirty years, as well as on his membership of the Commission on Environmental Law of the IUCN, the International Council on Environmental Law and the Netherlands Committee for International Nature Protection.

Synopsis Lyster's International Wildlife Law by : Michael Bowman
The development of international wildlife law has been one of the most significant exercises in international law-making during the last fifty years. This second edition of Lyster's International Wildlife Law coincides with both the UN Year of Biological Diversity and the twenty-fifth anniversary of Simon Lyster's first edition. The risk of wildlife depletion and species extinction has become even greater since the 1980s. This new edition provides a clear and authoritative analysis of the key treaties which regulate the conservation of wildlife and habitat protection, and of the mechanisms available to make them work. The original text has also been significantly expanded to include analysis of the philosophical and welfare considerations underpinning wildlife protection, the cross-cutting themes of wildlife and trade, and the impact of climate change and other anthropogenic interferences with species and habitat. Lyster's International Wildlife Law is an indispensable reference work for scholars, practitioners and policy-makers alike.

Synopsis Is CITES Protecting Wildlife? by : Tanya Wyatt
"This book assesses the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), examining both implementation and compliance. Humans are causing a biodiversity crisis, where one million species are facing extinction. Species are dying, in no small part, because they are overexploited, poached and trafficked and CITES is the main international instrument designed to protect traded wildlife. Does the state of the world's species mean CITES is failing? This book explores the implementation of and compliance with CITES by all one hundred and eighty-three member countries. It is imperative we know the nature and extent of the implementation of and compliance with CITES legislation in all parties to fully understand the impact of legal and illegal trade on species survival. Through extensive legislative content analysis, a Delphi iterative survey, and semi-structured interviews, this is the first book to share empirical research about CITES implementation and compliance. This book contains a comprehensive analysis of the state of CITES, what is done well, what could be done better, and what the future might bring to try to curtail the slide of the world's wildlife into extinction. By identifying lessons learned in relation to CITES legislation, implementation and compliance this book provides hard evidence to member countries as to how their own practice can be improved. This timely book will be essential reading for students and academics interested in wildlife law, trade and trafficking, green criminology and biodiversity conservation more broadly. It will also be of interest to professionals working in wildlife law enforcement"--

Synopsis International Marine Mammal Law by : Nikolas Sellheim
International Marine Mammal Law is a comprehensive, introductory volume on the legal regimes governing the conservation and utilisation of marine mammals. Written as a textbook, it provides basic overviews of international conservation law, which enable the reader to understand the greater implications of governance of a specific group of species. Paired with biological information on some marine mammal species, the international regimes for whales, seals and polar bears are explored — either as part of global regimes of international environmental governance or as regimes that were specifically designed for them. The book concludes with outlooks on the future of international marine mammal law, particularly in light of Japan’s withdrawal from the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling in July 2019.

Synopsis The Photo Ark by : Joel Sartore
This book of photography represents National Geographic's Photo Ark, a major cross-platform initiative and lifelong project by photographer Joel Sartore to make portraits of the world's animals -- especially those that are endangered. His message: to know these animals is to save them. Sartore intends to photograph every animal in captivity in the world. He is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction. He has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal. This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Paired with the prose of veteran wildlife writer Douglas Chadwick, this book presents an argument for saving all the species of our planet.
