Synopsis Turn This World Inside Out by : Nora Samaran
“Violence is nurturance turned backwards,” writes Nora Samaran. In Turn This World Inside Out, she presents Nurturance Culture as the opposite of rape culture and suggests how alternative models of care and accountability—different from “call-outs,” which are often rooted in the politics of shame and guilt—can move toward inverting cultures of dominance and systems of oppression. When communities are able to recognize and speak up about systemic violence, center the needs of those harmed, and hold a circle of belonging that humanizes everyone, they create a revolutionary foundation of nurturance that can begin to repair the harms inflicted by patriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalism. Emerging out of insights in Gender Studies, Race Theory, and Psychology, and influenced by contemporary social movements, Turn This World Inside Out speaks to some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Synopsis Turning Parliament Inside Out by : Michael Chong
For years, the prospect of parliamentary reform has been a hot-button issue in Canada. More and more Canadians find themselves frustrated with how Parliament works (or doesn't) and end up increasingly checked out from politics as a whole, feeling like their voices don't matter to those in power. When he introduced the "Reform Act" bill in 2013, Conservative MP Michael Chong brought the issue of parliamentary reform to the forefront, proposing changes that would empower MPs and hold party leadership accountable to their caucus--and therefore, to all Canadians. Although the changes required for such reforms are modest, the effects they would have on the Canadian democratic process would be revolutionary. In Turning Parliament Inside Out, Chong joins Kennedy Stewart (NDP) and Scott Simms (Liberal) in organizing a collaboration between MPs from all of Canada's major political parties, representing ridings from across the country. They join together in an across-the-aisle effort to make these changes a reality, explaining why reform is so urgently needed and proposing practical, achievable suggestions for making it happen. The contributors of this cross-partisan, cooperative project aimed at increasing citizen control of Canada's political institutions, include: FOREWORDS BY: Ed Broadbent, Preston Manning and Bob Rae NIKI ASHTON is the Member of Parliament for the riding of Churchill–Keewatinook Aski. Synopsis Where We Ate by : Gabby Peyton
“You've heard (and probably asked) this question a million times: ‘Where did you go for dinner?’” A love letter to 150 Canadian restaurants, and the stories and people behind them—from pre-Confederation to present day, from Victoria to St. John’s—here’s where we ate. What is Canadian cuisine? While cookbook authors and historians have spent decades trying to answer this question, Canadian food isn’t summed up by one iconic dish, but rather a huge range of meals, flavours, and cultural influences. It’s about the people who make our food, who cook it and serve it to us at lunch counters, in ornate dining rooms and through take-out windows. In her debut book, restaurant critic and journalist Gabby Peyton has penned a celebration of 150 restaurants that have left a mark on the way Canada eats—whether they’re serving California rolls, foie gras poutine, hand-cut beef tartare or bánh mì—and brings us from one decade to the next, showing how our dining trends evolved from beef consommé at Auberge Saint-Gabriel in 1754 to nori-covered hot dogs at Japadog. Organized chronologically, from pre-Confederation to the present day, you'll find Charming, entertaining essays, and transportive photos and menus from archival collections that give cultural, economic, and political context Many restaurants still open for business, so you can plan your visits and bring history alive on the plate 15 recipes inspired or contributed by some of the featured restaurants, for those wishing to truly feel like they’re dining in A joyous representation of the incredible diversity of restaurants, people, and stories that make up our Canadian dining history, Where We Ate is as much of a timeless classic as the restaurants it features.

Synopsis Taking the Bite Out of Rabies by : David John Gregory
Involved in rabies research for much of their working careers, editors David J. Gregory and Rowland R. Tinline explore Canada’s unique contributions to rabies management in Taking the Bite Out of Rabies. By placing the major players in rabies management from provincial and federal agencies, universities, and research institutions in historical context, Gregory and Tinline trace Canada’s largely successful efforts to control rabies. Concerned about the loss of institutional memory that tends to follow success, Gregory and Tinline view this book as a crucial way to collate, verify, and preserve records for future understanding and research. The book maps the history of rabies across Canada and explores the science, organization, research, and development behind Canada’s public health and wildlife vaccination programs. It also discusses how ongoing changes in agency mandates, the environment, and the evolution of the rabies virus affect present and future prevention and control efforts.
