Published by London's D. Giles Limited, the lavishly illustrated volume examines Walter Gay's life and work and features all 69 paintings in the exhibition. Main author Isabel L. Taube writes on Walter Gay's Poetic Rooms, and also wrote the catalogue portion of the exhibition, which organizes Walter Gay's work by residence;including sections on each of the Gay's own residences, as well as other homes Walter Gay was commissioned to paint in Europe and America. Other contributors are Priscilla Vail Caldwell, who writes on the enduring appeal of Walter Gay; arts expert Nina Gray, who focuses on interior decoration and the Rococo revival in America: and Frick Director of Curatorial Affairs Sarah Hall, who wrote essays about the three paintings in our collection.

This enthusiastically received collection contains Isaiah Berlin's appreciation of seventeen people of unusual distinction in the intellectual or political world - sometimes in both. The names of many of them are familiar - Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Chaim Weizmann, Albert Einstein, L. B. Namier, J. L. Austin, Maurice Bowra. With the exception of Roosevelt he met them all, and he knew many of them well. For this new edition four new portraits have been added, including recollections of Virginia Woolf and Edmund Wilson. "Impressions of a War Correspondent" by George Lynch primarily narrates the author's experiences during the Second Boer War, also known simply as the Boer War. From his near-death experiences to even being captured, the book recounts the landscape and devastation of war. Ukiyo-e (‘pictures of the floating world’) is a branch of Japanese art which originated during the period of prosperity in Edo (1615-1868). Characteristic of this period, the prints are the collective work of an artist, an engraver, and a printer. Created on account of their low cost thanks to the progression of the technique, they represent daily life, women, actors of kabuki theatre, or even sumo wrestlers. Landscape would also later establish itself as a favourite subject. Moronobu, the founder, Shunsho, Utamaro, Hokusai, and even Hiroshige are the most widely-celebrated artists of the movement. In 1868, Japan opened up to the West. The masterful technique, the delicacy of the works, and their graphic precision immediately seduced the West and influenced greats such as the Impressionists, Van Gogh, and Klimt. This is known as the period of ‘Japonisme’. Through a thematic analysis, Woldemar von Seidlitz and Dora Amsden implicitly underline the immense influence which this movement had on the entire artistic scene of the West. These magnificent prints represent the evolution of the feminine ideal, the place of the Gods, and the importance accorded to landscape, and are also an invaluable witness to a society now long gone.
