Synopsis The Ravenmaster by : Christopher Skaife
For centuries, the Tower of London has been home to a group of famous avian residents: the ravens. Each year they are seen by millions of visitors, and they have become as integral a part of the Tower as its ancient stones. But their role is even more important than that—legend has it that if the ravens should ever leave, the Tower will crumble into dust and great harm will befall the kingdom. The responsibility for ensuring that such a disaster never comes to pass falls to one man: the Ravenmaster. The current holder of the position is Yeoman Warder Christopher Skaife, and in this fascinating, entertaining and touching book he memorably describes the ravens’ formidable intelligence, their idiosyncrasies and their occasionally wicked sense of humour. The Ravenmaster is a compelling, inspiring and irreverent story that will delight and surprise anyone with an interest in British history or animal behaviour.

Synopsis Postwar Polish Poetry by : Czeslaw Milosz
"This expanded edition of Postwar Polish Poetry (which was originally published in 1965) presents 125 poems by 25 poets, including Czeslaw Milosz and other Polish poets living outside Poland. The stress of the anthology is on poetry written after 1956, the year when the lifting of censorship and the berakdown of doctrines provoked and explosion of new schools and talents. The victory of Solidarity in August 1980 once again opened new vistas for a short time; the coup of December closed that chapter. It is too early yet to predict the impact these events will have on the future of Polish poetry." From Amazon.

Synopsis New Contributions to the History of the Ukrainian Language by : Michael Moser
In this collection of scholarly essays, Michael Moser examines the history of the Ukrainian language and takes issue with the verdict of the infamous Russian Valuev Directive of 1863 that Ukrainian is "a language that did not, does not, and cannot exist." Moser shows that Ukrainian is as deeply rooted in the past as any other Slavic language, has developed on an autochthonous basis, and has been in contact with other languages. Moser demonstrates that the elaboration of Modern Standard Ukrainian was the result of complex efforts of codification carried out under specific historical circumstances. Finally, he examines specific problems of the history of the Ukrainian language in Galicia, Transcarpathia, and North America and discusses the impact of language policy on the more recent history of the Ukrainian language.

Synopsis The Gun My Sister Killed Herself with by : Daniel Lawless
Like everything else in this wrenching, dazzling volume, memory is mediated by wit and skepticism. These are poems of great beauty and authentic pain, as well as a wincing humor. The world in these poems comes at the reader as a mesmerizing swarm of images, which sting as much as they please. Their cumulative effect is a kind of sorrowful wonder. This is a book you will not forget. Daniel Lawless is the founder and editor of Plume: A Journal of Contemporary Poetry, the Plume anthologies and co-founder of the poetry press, Plume Editions. He now resides in St. Petersburg, Florida.
