Synopsis How to Measure (Classic Reprint) by : G. M. Wilson

Excerpt from How to Measure Other studies have been made. One of similar character, which has led to the formation of a spelling scale, was conducted by Dr. Leonard P. Ayres. Dr. Ayres examined a total Of words written by 2500 different persons. This was a summary of previous studies. The first of these studies included in all about words taken from standard literary selections. The second was an analysis of 250 different articles which appeared in four Sunday news papers published in Buffalo. The third consisted of the tabulations of words from 2000 Short business letters. The fourth consisted of some words taken from the family correspondence of 13 adults. The Ayres study has the advantage of being based upon the words used by adults, and if we assume that the schools must prepare for active social participation on the adult level, then certainly Dr. Ayres' study would be above criticism from the standpoint Of determining the fundamental words of the English language in common use for writing purposes. The Jones study and the Ayres study are in complete agree ment as to the simplicity and small compass of the writing vocabulary. Any adequate test must be based upon the words of the language that are in common use and fundamental in written work. Synopsis Physical Measurements (Classic Reprint) by : A. Wilmer Duff

Excerpt from Physical Measurements Our intention in writing this book was not to give an account of physical laboratory methods in general, but to describe a limited number of carefully chosen exercises such as we have found in our experience to be suitable for the laboratory work of students who have had a fair course in General College Physics. The descriptions of the exercises will usually fit apparatus and conditions of considerable diversity, but many practical details have been included where experience has shown that they are necessary. Other instructors who may adopt the book will probably find some of the exercises unsuited to their classes, but the list is sufficiently extensive to afford a considerable variety of selection. The descriptions of apparatus are intended to be read by the student with the apparatus before him. Hence elaborate illustrations have been thought unnecessary. For an extended account of certain special topics, such as the theory of the balance and the construction of galvanometers, references to other works have been given. Usually several text-books and special treatises have been referred to at the beginning of the account of an experiment. It is assumed that each student will have one of the text-books and that some of the special works will be found in the reference room of the laboratory. While the reference is generally to the latest edition (at the present date, 19 lo), those who have different editions will have no difficulty in finding the passages referred to. Synopsis Evolution and the Need of Atonement (Classic Reprint) by : Stewart Andrew McDowall

Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Synopsis How to Measure in Education (Classic Reprint) by : William Anderson McCall

Excerpt from How to Measure in Education The science of measurement is in its infancy and the art of measurement is younger still. Yet both have developed at such a phenomenal rate in the last few years as to make this movement for the mental measurement of children the most dramatic tendency in modern education. Educators returning from a few years' sojourn in foreign missionary fields testify that no recent change in educational practices compares with that effected by the growth of scientific edu cational and intelligence testing. During the war, and since, it was my privilege to confer with educational or military commissions sent here by several foreign governments to study our schools. These representatives testified that the extensive use of scientific mental measurement was one of the most distinctive features of American education. This book describes rather fully the meaning and methods of this movement. The art of measurement is younger than the science of measurement because the abler workers have, of necessity, devoted their energies almost exclusively to the origination of foundational techniques. But the whole movement was so promising in the way of concrete assistance in meeting educational problems that practical educators have irre sistibly demanded that the science of measurement be turned into the art of measurement almost overnight. Hence the last two or three years has witnessed a feverish effort to meet these demands. The result has been numerous mis takes and remarkable successes. This book has a fourfold aim. First, it aims to present these successes and warn against a repetition of the mis takes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Secret of Progress (Classic Reprint) by : W. Cunningham

Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Synopsis Greek Prose Composition (Classic Reprint) by : Henry Carr Pearson

Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
