Synopsis Holiness in Words by : Edward K. Kaplan

Holiness in Words: Abraham Joshua Heschel's Poetics of Piety is both an introduction to reading Heschel's works in English, and an in-depth study of the way his literary style can transform the consciousness of readers. Heschel's life and works respond to the contemporary crisis in religion, formulating positions on faith and despair, racism and social justice, the Holocaust, interreligious dialogue, and the availability of God's presence. We study Heschel's theory and use of literary language, his "poetics of piety," in order to elucidate his narrative strategy to teach God-centered (or prophetic) thinking. The book traces the major themes of his "depth theology," awe and radical amazement, the meaning of symbol, ritual, prayer, and mystical insight. Historical and biographical information clarifies Heschel's implicit polemic with Martin Buber and a supplemental study guide provides sources for each chapter and suggestions for further thought and discussion.

Synopsis The Holiness of God by : R.C. Sproul

Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.

Synopsis Holiness for Growing Christians by : Allan Brown

Do you long to be more like Jesus? Do you desire to live a holy life? Do you seek to answer the Spirit's call: "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy'" (1 Peter 1:15- 16)? If so, this book was written for you. Unfortunately, many Christians are confused about what the Bible teaches about living a holy life. I've had students who came from good Gospel-preaching churches who were not sure they even believed in what they heard called "holiness." Either their church did not speak much about it or what they heard seemed legalistic or unattainable. It is sad that there is so much careless and sometimes contradictory teaching about this vital subject. The aim of this book is to be as biblically and contextually accurate as possible in the use of words and phrases such as "holy, holiness, sanctify, the Spirit-filled life, and entire sanctification." Further, I seek to limit my comments to what the Scriptures actually affirm. I do not attempt to answer every question that can be raised when talking about the biblical doctrine of sanctification. Rather, I seek to affirm what Scriptures affirm and leave unsaid what Scriptures do not say. I think any reader of Scripture will agree that God does command Christians to be holy. The burning question is: "What does God mean when He commands us to be holy?" This book is an attempt to answer that question.

Synopsis The Five Greek Words in the New Testament Relating to Holy Holiness and to Be Made Holy by : Repsaj Jasper

Most of the English translation of the New Testament contain words such as "holy", "sanctify", "holiness" and "sanctification" in reference to the God, Jesus Christ and the Spirit of the God, and also referrring to those called out and sent out by the God. The translated word "holy" is often to describe temple and places where the presence of the God and also His dwelling place. There are hardly any writing detailing the meaning and significance of "holy", "sanctify", "holiness", "sanctification" by "Christian authors" according to the New Testament scriptures. Words such as "holy" and "holiness" are used in the world especially by people of other religions describing places and people such as the Dalai Lama and the pope, the head of the Catholic Church. Do those who confess to be believers into the Lord Jesus Christ understand the meaning of "holy", "sanctify", "holiness" and "sanctification" as translated in most English Bibles? We often hear of the saying, "We are sinners saved by the grace of the God" by so-called Christians. This statement is not the truth. The truth is that sinners are saved by the grace of the God, who then makes sinners to become holy ones in order that they may be saved. That is why in the New Testament scriptures the apostles often described believers as "holy ones" or "saints" because unless those called by the God to salvation become holy they will not enter into the kingdom of the God or will not receive everlasting life. It is therefore important that those who are called out by the God to salvation must not only understand the meaning of "holy", "sanctify", "holiness" and "sanctification", they must also ultimately become holy before the God in order that they may inherit everlasting life. To many professing believers today the words "holy" and "holiness" are rather nebulous or vague to them. They mostly link holy and holiness to the God, Jesus Christ, the angels and the prophets of the God. And if the believers are called holy ones, they understand that they are cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ, even though they still live and walk according to their own thinking of what is good. This Book Number 21 is released to reveal the true meaning of five Greek words relating to holy, sanctify, holiness and sanctificatioin, and how they are linked to the salvation of those the God called/calls to salvation. Since all mankind ar born sinners, how are those mankind who are called to salvation made holy or become holy? The five Greek words appearing in the New Testament scriptures revealed in this book are "hagios", "hagiazo", "hagiasmos", "hagiosune" and "hosiotes". Their meaning and significance to the gospel of salvation are also revealed according to the contexts in its appearance in each scripture. The relationship between holy and righteous is also revealed according to the New Testament scriptures. Believers are told to pursue to holiness without which they will not see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14) and Peter told believers that they must be holy in all behaviour and that believers must become holy because the God is holy(1 Peter 1:15-16). This book reveals the essentials according to the New Testament scriptures the meaning of holy, holiness and how to become holy in order for believers to be blameless before the God to receive everlasting life.

Synopsis Holier Than Thou by : Jackie Hill Perry

If God is holy, then He can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then He can’t sin against you. If He can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make Him the most trustworthy being there is? Bestselling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God— we misunderstand His holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news. In these pages, we will see that God is not like us. He is different. He is holy. And that’s exactly what makes Him trustworthy. As it turns out, God being “holier than thou” is actually the best news in the world, and it’s the key to trusting Him.

Synopsis Holiness by : J. C. Ryle

J. C. Ryle's "Holiness " is a lost treasure, written by one of the great Anglican priests and writers of the nineteenth century. Hendrickson reintroduces this classic text, largely unavailable today, on living a Christ-like life. "Holiness " is considered to be one of the most profound books on discipleship in the English language. Christians have recognized anew the critical importance of discipleship and spiritual formation to the life of the individual believer, the local church and to the Kingdom of God. Ryle's "Holiness " ranks among the core library of teachings on being a disciple of Jesus Christ. In this book, Ryle encourages the reader into a life of holiness, drawn completely from the Bible and not from contemporary books or preachers, or from any of the fads that were popular during his lifetime, much as they are today or in any era. He is writing about personal, or private, holiness, the life we live behind closed doors with our families and closest friends. "I have had a deep conviction for many years that practical holiness and entire self-consecration to God are not sufficiently attended by modern Christians in this country. Politics, controversy, or party-spirit, or worldliness, have eaten out the heart of lively piety in too many of us. The subject of personal godliness has fallen sadly into the background." --"J. C. Ryle "

Synopsis Holiness is Always in Season by : Pope Benedict XVI

For a Christian, the way to reach perfection is to strive for holiness. What is true perfection? Christ's words are clear, sublime and disconcerting: "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." To have God as our model is a dizzying thought! Yet the Church reminds us that, "All the faithful, whatever their condition or state in life, are called by the Lord to that perfect holiness." The Church teaches us that holiness is not the concern of a privileged few, nor does it only pertain to Christians of the past. Holiness is always a call to every Christian of every age, a challenge for anyone who wants to follow in the footsteps of Christ. Pope Benedict XVI says: "Holiness never goes out of fashion; on the contrary, with the passage of time it shines out ever more brightly, expressing man's perennial effort to reach God." Mother Teresa of Calcutta wrote: "Holiness is not something for the extraordinary; it is not a luxury of the few. Holiness is the simple duty for each one of us." The saints are our models and teachers in the ways of holiness. They show us that holiness is possible for us, since they experienced the same difficulties and weaknesses we do, yet persevered in achieving sanctity. The world of saints is a world of wonders, and in this book Pope Benedict XVI helps us to enter into that world. This inspiring volume presents the Pope's numerous reflections on many saints arranged according to the calendar year. He shows how the life of each saint has something unique to teach us about virtue, faith, courage and love of Christ. Dozens of saints are covered in this wonderful spiritual book. The Pope exhorts us through their lives, "Be holy! Be saints!"
