Synopsis Holberg Suite by :

"Aus Holbergs Zeit, Suite im alten Stil, Op.40" - now more commonly known as the "Holberg Suite" - was written in 1884 for the 200th anniversary celebration of playwright Ludvig Holberg's birth. Originally for piano, the composer scored it for strings the following year, conducting the newly-completed arrangement at a March concert in Bergen. The Suite consists of a Prelude and four dances characteristic of the 18th century. The work was meant to capture the feel of the era of Holberg's lifetime and has become one of Grieg's most beloved and performed works, especially in the present setting for strings. This new edition by Richard W. Sargeant, Jr. has been thoroughly researched to bring you a beautiful score as the composer intended it.

Synopsis Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754) by : Knud Haakonssen

Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754) was the foremost representative of the Danish-Norwegian Enlightenment and also a European figure of note. He published significant works in natural law and history, but also a very important body of moral essays and epistles. He authored several engaging autobiographies and European travelogues, a major utopian novel that was an immediate European succes, interesting satires that advocated women’s education and career, and a large number of comedies. These comedies secured Holberg’s status as the most significant playwright in Scandinavia before Ibsen and Strindberg. Through his extensive oeuvre, but especially through his plays, Holberg had a decisive influence on the formation of modern Danish as a literary language, something that was a self-conscious effort on the part of a man who saw himself as an educator of the public. Despite his contemporary impact at home and abroad and his ongoing popularity in Scandinavia, he remains little known in the wider world of enlightenment studies. It is the aim of this volume to revive Holberg as a major figure from a minor corner of the Enlightenment world by presenting the full variety of his work and giving it a European context.

Synopsis Grieg by : H. T. Finck

The book is declared by its author as the first work with information regarding the life, personality and works of Edvard Grieg in English or German. The author is able to give a thorough account of both Grieg the man, and Grieg the composer with descriptions and analyses of his works. Pictures are painted of Grieg’s life in Germany and Norway; Peer Gynt and the influence of Ibsen; the effect of composers such as Liszt and Wagner; the role of Norwegian folk music; the impression left by the Norwegian countryside; and more. A highly useful inclusion in the volume is a bibliography of works on Grieg in English, French, German, and Norwegian, as well as a complete list of Edvard Grieg’s musical works. The fact that this is among the earliest books on Grieg coupled with the fact that it was written while Grieg was still alive makes the volume a most necessary addition to any collection of works by and on Grieg. It is indispensable for researchers and scholars of Grieg, and provides a clear and appealing introduction to the newcomer.
