After teaching 30 years, Shirley is retired from school districts of Orange, Beaumont, and Plano, TX. Her avocation is an after-dinner speaker and as "Mother Goose" for daycare centers, elementary schools, festivals, and health fairs. She has five adult children, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Poland has taught Bible classes for many years and continues to serve in her church. Shirley grew up in Orange, TX and recently married her grade school sweetheart, now a retired minister, who has helped her discover her talents in painting and writing.

The school has served deaf and hard of hearing students in the state of Wisconsin since 1852. WSD has an average annual enrollment of 180 students in grades pre-K through 12th. WSD stresses quality of service to students and parents. We focus on meeting the needs of students with disabilities in the areas of academic, adaptive education, vocational and social skills development. When she was pushed into a hearing world without verbal or writing communication skills at the age of eighteen, she was not able to blend in. Finally, she determined that she was abandoned on the streets where she was preyed upon by pimps who force her into prostitution. This is a chilling account of the exploitation of a person with a disability, but it is also a story of remarkable courage and triumph of the human spirit. A Truly amazing transformation! Silent Cries of a Military Wife is a terrifying, sometimes hilarious, sometimes downright devastating truth that I lived for over a decade. For years, like many others, I accepted things that no woman should have. I allowed the one person who was supposed to give me love and respect treat me like I was less than nothing. I thought by accepting the treatment, at some point, he would see that what he was doing was hurting me and it would force him to change, but sadly, that never happened. I watched myself change as a woman, mother, daughter, and friend into a person I didn’t even recognize. I asked the military and those around me for help, but my cries repeatedly went unnoticed. When I finally received help, I was ostracized by those whom I called friends because of my decision to stay. Now I want to share my story with all of you and all those women who are silenced.
