Synopsis Green Talk in the White House by : Tarla Rai Peterson
The environment figures prominently in American political debate of the twentieth century. Issues of wilderness and wetlands preservation, clean air and clean water, and the sustainable use of natural resources attract passionate advocacy and demands for national as well as local action. Presidents since Theodore Roosevelt have addressed these issues, rhetorically (though not always prominently) in their public addresses and pragmatically in their policies and appointments to pertinent positions. Green Talk in the White House gathers an array of approaches to studying environmental rhetoric and the presidency, covering a range of presidential administrations and a diversity of viewpoints on how the concept of the “rhetorical presidency” may be modified in this policy area. Tarla Rai Peterson’s introduction discusses both methodological and substantive issues in studying presidential rhetoric on the environment. In subsequent chapters, noted scholars examine various aspects of half a dozen modern presidencies to shed light not only on those administrations but also on the study of environmental rhetoric itself. The final section of the book then directs attention to the future of presidential rhetoric and environmental governance, with looks “in” at state-level environmental issues and looks “out” at the international context of environmentalism. As a whole, the volume is ideal for those looking to better understand the particular intersection of presidency, policy, and rhetorical studies.

Synopsis Forestry and the Forest Industries: Past and Future by : E.G. Richards
In analysing the development and achievements of Polish forestry and forest industries over the last four decades, it is necessary to take into consideration the situation prevailing after the end of the Second World War, when these sectors of the national economy were starting their activities. First of all, it is necessary to consider the effects of the war such as: (a) the harvesting from the forests of the present Polish territory of 3 about 200 million m of merchantable wood, which is equal to the normal harvest over a l2-year period; (b) the destruction of over half the woodworking industrial potential. In consequence, the forested area inside the new Polish boundaries amounted 40 years ago only to 20.8 per cent of the whole area of the country. There has been a continuing process of increasing the forested area of the country (although at a diminishing rate). In 1986 the forest area amounted to 27.7 per cent of the land surface, that is to 8.7 million ha, an increase of over 2 million ha in 40 years. Intensive afforestation, performed regardless of the ownership category of the land by the State forest service, was aimed primarily at making good the losses in the forested area and the rational use of land not fit for agricultural purposes.

Synopsis Environmental Viewpoints by : Daniel G. Marowski
Environmental concerns have created a demand by the public for more information. To meet this need, the publisher has created the ``Environmental Library'' series, patterned after their ``Literature Criticism'' series. The volume contains reprinted, excerpted essays from 100 popular and professional journals. Entries such as global warming, population, and wildlife conservation are 15-20 pages in length. Each entry contains a brief overview of the topic, various in-depth commentaries from the reprinted articles, and a bibliography. The articles and bibliography are somewhat outdated, with most citations published in the 1980s and only a small number from the 1990s. Gale has plans to continue this series with volumes on new subjects and updates of previous topics. Eva Lautemann, DeKalb Coll. Lib., Clarkston, Ga. -Library Journal.

Synopsis Language, Schooling, and Cultural Conflict by : Chad Gaffield
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF Bilingualism was at the heart of controversy in Ontario politics one hundred years ago when Anglophones burned effigies of Louis Riel and Francophones hanged flaming images of John A. Macdonald. Strong public reaction to Bill 8 made bilingualism one of the most pressing issues in the 1987 provincial election campaign. Now available in paperback, Language, Schooling and Cultural Conflict recasts this central debate of Canadian history and calls into question both the theory and method of established studies in cultural conflict and ethnic identity. The book thus provides a very dramatic example of how recent research strategies can benefit our understanding of Canadian history and cultural affairs.
