Synopsis Going Dutch in Beijing by : Mark McCrum

What to do and what not to do when traveling almost anywhere—an entertainment for the armchair or the intrepid traveler Why shouldn't you offer to pay for your share of the meal in China? Or use the thumbs-up sign to mean "that's excellent" in Sardinia? Because, of course, despite the ease with which we can now communicate with and visit one another, they still do things differently over there. Going Dutch in Beijing offers a lighthearted and informative guide to everything from first meeting to last rites. Subjects covered include the opening contact between strangers; greetings, gestures, handshakes, and getting names right; as well as more complex traditions and how to behave if you decide to stick around for good. Synopsis Chinese Public Theology by : Alexander Chow

It has been widely recognized that Christianity is the fastest growing religion in one of the last communist-run countries of the world: the People's Republic of China. Yet it would be a mistake to describe Chinese Christianity as merely a clandestine faith or, as hoped by the Communist Party of China, a privatized religion. Alexander Chow argues that Christians in mainland China have been constructing a more intentional public theology to engage the Chinese state and society, since the end of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Chinese Public Theology recalls the events which have led to this transformation and examines the developments of Christianity across three generations of Chinese intellectuals from the state-sanctioned Protestant church, the secular academy, and the growing urban renaissance in Calvinism. Moreover, Chow shows how each of these generations have provided different theological responses to the same sociopolitical moments of the last three decades. This study illustrates how a growing understanding of Chinese public theology has been developed through a subconscious intermingling of Christian and Confucian understandings of public intellectualism. These factors result in a contextually-unique understanding of public theology, but also one which is faced by contextual limitations as well. With this in mind, Chow draws from the Eastern Orthodox doctrine of theosis and the Chinese traditional teaching of the unity of Heaven and humanity (Tian ren heyi) to offer a way forward in the construction of a Chinese public theology.

Synopsis Connections I [text + workbook], Textbook & Workbook by : Jennifer Li-chia Liu

Praise for Interactions I & II: "Practical and lively without neglecting the structure and the writing system. The workbook is especially interesting and helpful." —Chauncey C. Chu, University of Florida ". . . by far the best first-year textbooks available." —Sabina Knight, Smith College Connections I & II is the second-year sequence to accompany the enormously popular introductory texts Interactions I & II by Margaret Yan and Jennifer Li-chia Liu. This innovative system makes learning Chinese an interactive, cognitive process rather than a matter of simple rote or drill. Connections is designed to offer intermediate learners of Chinese a complete set of learning tools to improve their language skills and enhance their understanding of Chinese culture and society. Lesson topics revolve around everyday themes and real-world communication among four central characters—a mainland Chinese, a Taiwanese, a Chinese American, and a non-Chinese American—familiar to students using Interactions. Each 10-chapter volume is accompanied by a workbook. Chapters include sections on vocabulary, text, mini-dialogue, characters, grammar, and culture notes, accompanied by engaging graphics. Connections also includes stories and songs, and makes use of a wide variety of texts such as narrative, dialogue, journal entries, riddles, jokes, news headlines, and lyrics.
