Synopsis There Are Giants in This Valley by : Jack Hillman

For twelve-year-old Eric Johnson, leaving Philadelphia to live with his Uncle Al and Aunt Cindy in the country, after the accident that took his parents lives, was hard enough. Yet tragedies past seem to pale in the wake of becoming involved in a war of mythic pro-portions between the Norse gods of the Aesir and the Frost Giants, competing for domination of Midgard (Earth) and Asgard (realm of the Aesir). Eric befriends the mighty Thor, his father Odin, and brother Loki, along with the industrious Rock Dwarves and the Valkyrie to save his uncle, his friends, and ultimately the planet and realms beyond. This is a classic adventure, seen through a young boy's eyes as he learns to accept responsibility and grow into a man. Adults and young readers alike will enjoy this truly heroic tale. "The action's divine, the plot mischievously intricate, and the characters of epic proportion (literally and figuratively). Tossed into the sea of chaos is a likable young hero who manages to survive the twists of fate." Virginia G. McMorrow Author, Mage Confusion "Superb! This can only be the beginning of the adventures of Eric and Thor. I can't wait to see what challenges they face next." P.M. Griffin Author, The STAR COMMANDOS Series

Synopsis The Chalice of Mystery by : Benjamin Towe

"The Chalice of Mystery" records the deeds of heroes and legends of Donothor. The chronicle occurs three hundred years after the fall of the sorcerer of the Lachinor Morlecainen and his daughter Chalar and seven centuries before the Deathquest to Parallan. The Aivendar family has wisely and justly ruled Donothor, but fantastic creatures roam the land and large areas of Donothor remained unexplored. The Light Sorceress Knarra keeps an uneasy eye toward the Iron Mountains, the imposing eastern border to the growing civilization, and the Lachinor, the great swamp to the south. Attacks by an unlikely alliance of creatures from the Iron Mountains shatter the fragile peace and terrorize Donothor. Knarra enlists the mysterious Dark Sorcerer Roscoe, the dwarves of Hillesdale, a red-haired elf, a legendary dwarfish fighter, and the Rangers of Lyndyn to battle the alliance of red giants, ice giants, ogres, two-headed Ettins, troglodytes, dragons, and stranger ilk. A relic of evil rests in the Iron Mountains. What role does the artifact play in the future of Donothor? What evil unites the denizens of the Iron Mountains?

Synopsis Outsiders by : Sylvia Huot

Giants are a ubiquitous feature of medieval romance. As remnants of a British prehistory prior to the civilization established, according to the Historium regum Britannie, by Brutus and his Trojan followers, giants are permanently at odds with the chivalric culture of the romance world. Whether they are portrayed as brute savages or as tyrannical pagan lords, giants serve as a limit against which the chivalric hero can measure himself. In Outsiders: The Humanity and Inhumanity of Giants in Medieval French Prose Romance, Sylvia Huot argues that the presence of giants allows for fantasies of ethnic and cultural conflict and conquest, and for the presentation—and suppression—of alternative narrative and historical trajectories that might have made Arthurian Britain a very different place. Focusing on medieval French prose romance and drawing on aspects of postcolonial theory, Huot examines the role of giants in constructions of race, class, gender, and human subjectivity. She selects for study the well-known prose Lancelot and the prose Tristan, as well as the lesser known Perceforest, Le Conte du papegau, Guiron le Courtois, and Des Grantz Geants. By asking to what extent views of giants in Arthurian romance respond to questions that concern twenty-first-century readers, Huot demonstrates the usefulness of current theoretical concepts and the issues they raise for rethinking medieval literature from a modern perspective.
