Synopsis Fretting Wear, Fretting Fatigue and Damping of Structures by : Toshio Hattori

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanical distinctions between fretting damage under axial or bending external forces and fretting damage under a torsional load. It emphasizes the importance of studying practical accident cases to efficiently acquire technical skills. The book is structured around the fundamental technologies of material science, tribology, and mechanics, which are vital for understanding and addressing technical issues. The author has incorporated all fretting countermeasure technologies, which were previously often sensory and empirical in nature, and repositioned them as technologies grounded in fundamental principles. The book proposes an economical approach to product operation that maintains reliability by integrating not only design technology but also maintenance practices. It delves into specific materials, such as titanium alloys and aluminum alloys, which have seen increased use for weight reduction in industries like aerospace. In this book, “Critical Distance Stress Theory” that can easily derive the fatigue limit and fatigue life of the stress singular field at the contact edge was presented. As a result, the fretting fatigue strength and life can be predicted from the same FEM stress analysis as the normal stress concentration part. And finally, introducing a novel fretting mechanical model, the book focuses on scenarios where pressure force (N) and repeated tangential force (F) are applied to two planar objects, with the tangential force being transmitted solely through friction at the contact surface. This model finds relevance in turbine blade connection structures, among other applications. The author references Asai's research example, which encompasses fretting mechanical analysis, fretting wear evaluation, fatigue assessment, and structural damping evaluation using this model.

Synopsis High Cycle Fatigue by : Theodore Nicholas

Dr Theodore Nicholas ran the High Cycle Fatigue Program for the US Air Force between 1995 and 2003 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and is one of the world's leading authorities on the subject, having authored over 250 papers in leading archival journals and books. Bringing his plethora of expertise to this book, Dr Nicholas discusses the subject of high cycle fatigue (HCF) from an engineering viewpoint in response to a series of HCF failures in the USAF and the concurrent realization that HCF failures in general were taking place universally in both civilian and military engines. Topic covered include: - Constant life diagrams - Fatigue limits under combined LCF and HCF - Notch fatigue under HCF conditions - Foreign object damage (FOD) - Brings years of the Author's US Air Force experience in high cycle fatigue together in one text - Discusses HCF in the context of recent international military and civilian engine failures

Synopsis Biaxial/Multiaxial Fatigue and Fracture by : Andrea Carpinteri

The European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) Technical Commitee on Fatigue of Engineering Materials and Structures (TC3) decided to compile a Special Technical Publication (ESIS STP) based on the 115 papers presented at the 6th International Conference on Biaxial/Multiaxial Fatigue and Fracture. The 25 papers included in the STP have been extended and revised by the authors. The conference was held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 25-28 June 2001, and was chaired by Manual De Freitas, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon. The meeting, organised by the Instituto Superior Tecnico and sponsored by the Portuguese Minesterio da Cienca e da Tecnologia and by the European Structural Integrity Society, was attended by 151 delegates from 20 countries. The papers in the present book deal with the theoretical, numerical and experimental aspects of the Multiaxial fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and structures. They are divided in to the following six sections; Multiaxial Fatigue of Welded Structures; High cycle Multiaxial fatigue; Non proportional and Variable-Amplitude loading; Defects, Notches, Crack Growth; Low Cycle Multiaxial Fatigue; Applications and Testing Methods. As is well-known, most engineering components and structures in the mechanical, aerospace, power generation, and other industries are subjected to multiaxial loading during their service life. One of the most difficult tasks in design against fatigue and fracture is to translate the information gathered from uniaxial fatigue and fracture tests on engineering materials into applications involving complex states of cyclic stress-strain conditions. This book is the result of co-operation between many researchers from different laboratories, universities and industries in a number of countries.

Synopsis Fatigue Design and Reliability by : G. Marquis

This volume represents a selection of papers presented at the Third International Symposium on Fatigue Design, Fatigue Design 1998, held in Espoo, Finland, 26-29 May, 1998.One objective of this symposium series was to help bridge the gap that sometimes exists between researchers and engineers responsible for designing components against fatigue failure. The 21 selected papers provide an up-to-date survey of engineering practice and a preview of design methods that are advancing toward application. Reliability was selected as a key theme for FD'98. During the design of components and structures, it is not sufficient to combine mean material properties, average usage parameters, and pre-selected safety factors. The engineer must also consider potential scatter in material properties, different end users, manufacturing tolerances and uncertainties in fatigue damage models. Judgement must also be made about the consequences of potential failure and the required degree of reliability for the structure or component during its service life. Approaches to ensuring reliability may vary greatly depending on the structure being designed. Papers in this volume intentionally provide a multidisciplinary perspective on the issue. Authors represent the ground vehicle, heavy equipment, power generation, ship building and other industries. Identical solutions cannot be used in all cases because design methods must always provide a balance between accuracy and simplicity. The point of balance will shift depending on the type of input data available and the component being considered.

Synopsis Fatigue of Materials and Structures by : Claude Bathias

The design of mechanical structures with predictable and improved durability cannot be achieved without a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of fatigue damage and more specifically the relationships between the microstructure of materials and their fatigue properties. Written by leading researchers in the field, this book, along with the complementary books Fatigue of Materials and Structures: Fundamentals and Application to Damage and Design (both also edited by Claude Bathias and André Pineau), provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, polymers and composites. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major classes of materials or to different types of fatigue damage, thereby providing overall coverage of the field. This book deals with multiaxial fatigue, thermomechanical fatigue, fretting-fatigue, influence of defects on fatigue life, cumulative damage and damage tolerance, and will be an important and much used reference for students, practicing engineers and researchers studying fracture and fatigue in numerous areas of materials science and engineering, mechanical, nuclear and aerospace engineering.
