Synopsis The Point of Fracture by : Frank Turner Hollon
A troubled woman, bent on revenge, implicates her husband, his family, and a Southern community in an unsolvable murder. After nearly fifteen years in a childless marriage, Michael Brace and his beautiful wife, Suzanne, live separate lives under the same roof. Suzanne suffers crippling headaches and is haunted by childhood memories of her father, visions of violence, and the bloodlines of mental illness. Michael, meanwhile, sleeps on the couch, hiding in the shadows of his wealthy family and thinking about the novel he’s always wanted to write. In a tangled desire for revenge against her father, her husband, his family, and everything she cannot reconcile, Suzanne Brace sets in motion a patient, complicated plan of deception, sacrifice, and death. But as with all plans – even those executed to perfection – there are waves of fatal consequence. With spare prose and shrewd insight, Hollon explores the intertwined relationships of family and community in the face of an unthinkable crime, and illuminates the fine line between destruction and salvation.

Synopsis Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures by : S.H. Teoh
Recent advances in the field of fracture of engineering materials and structures have increasingly indicated its multidisciplinary nature. This area of research now involves scientists and engineers who work in materials science, applied mathematics and mechanics, and also computer scientists. The present volume, which contains the Proceedings of the Joint FEFG/lCF International Conference on Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures held in Singapore from the 6th to 8th of August 1991, is a testimony of this multidisciplinary nature. This International Conference was the Second Symposium of the Far East Fracture Group (FEFG) and thus provided a unique opportunity for researchers and engineers in the Far East region to exchange and acquire knowledge of new advances and applications in fracture. The Conference was also the Inter-Quadrennial International Conference on Fracture (ICF) for 1991 and thus appealed to researchers in the international arena who wished to take advantage of this meeting to present their findings. The Conference has brought together over 130 participants from more than 24 countries, and they represented government and industrial research laboratories as well as academic institutions. It has thus achieved its objective of bringing together scientists and engineers with different backgrounds and perspectives but with . a common interest in new developments in the fracture of engineering materials and structures. This volume contains 4 keynote papers, 4 invited papers and 130 contributed papers.

Synopsis A Variational Approach to Fracture and Other Inelastic Phenomena by : Gianpietro Del Piero
This book exposes a number of mathematical models for fracture of growing difficulty. All models are treated in a unified way, based on incremental energy minimization. They differ from each other by the assumptions made on the inelastic part of the total energy, here called the "cohesive energy". Each model describes a specific aspect of material response, and particular care is devoted to underline the correspondence of each model to the experiments. The content of the book is a re-elaboration of the lectures delivered at the First Sperlonga Summer School on Mechanics and Engineering Sciences in September 2011. In the year and a half elapsed after the course, the material has been revised and enriched with new and partially unpublished results. Significant additions have been introduced in the occasion of the course "The variational approach to fracture and other inelastic phenomena", delivered at SISSA, Trieste, in March 2013. The Notes reflect a research line carried on by the writer over the years, addressed to a comprehensive description of the many aspects of the phenomenon of fracture, and to its relations with other phenomena, such as the formation of microstructure and the changes in the material’s strength induced by plasticity and damage. Reprinted from the Journal of Elasticity, volume 112, issue 1, 2013.

Synopsis Field Guide to Fracture Management by :
Organized by body region and fracture type, this practical resource covers the full spectrum of topics related to effective fracture management—from essential clinical guidance on casting and splinting techniques and handling complications to chapters on training, case selection, and insurance issues. The standardized chapter format includes a "how-to" outline to help clinicians locate key facts easily. Illustrations, tables, and figures offer visual guidance in the treatment of simple and complex fractures. The practical approach shows what works, what doesn't, and why. Pediatric content assists the family practitioner in treating childhood fractures. Tips on avoiding pitfalls are also included.

Synopsis Recovery, Analysis, and Identification of Commingled Human Remains by : Bradley J. Adams
Commingling of human remains presents an added challenge to all phases of the forensic process. This book brings together tools from diverse sources within forensic science to offer a set of comprehensive approaches to handling commingled remains. It details the recovery of commingled remains in the field, the use of triage in the assessment of commingling, various analytical techniques for sorting and determining the number of individuals, the role of DNA in the overall process, ethical considerations, and data management. In addition, the book includes case examples that illustrate techniques found to be successful and those that proved problematic.

Synopsis Fracture and Fatigue Control in Structures by : Stanley Theodore Rolfe
Emphasizes applications of fracture mechanics to prevent fracture and fatigue failures in structures, rather than the theoretical aspects of fracture mechanics. The concepts of driving force and resistance force are used to differentiate between the mathematical side and the materials side. Case studies of actual failures are new to the third edition. Synopsis Deformation and Fracture of Solid-State Materials by : Sanichiro Yoshida
This volume introduces a comprehensive theory of deformation and fracture to engineers and applied scientists. Here “comprehensive” means that the theory can describe all stages of deformation from elastic to plastic and plastic to fracturing stage on the same basis (equations). The comprehensive approach is possible because the theory is based on a fundamental physical principle called the local symmetry, or gauge invariance, as opposed to phenomenology. Professor Yoshida explains the gist of local symmetry (gauge invariance) intuitively so that engineers and applied physicists can digest it easily, rather than describing physical or mathematical details of the principle. The author also describes applications of the theory to practical engineering, such as nondestructive testing in particular, with the use of an optical interferometric technique called ESPI (Electronic Speckle-Pattern Interferometry). The book is not a manual of applications. Instead, it provides information on how to apply physical concepts to engineering applications.

Synopsis Statistical Physics of Fracture, Breakdown, and Earthquake by : Soumyajyoti Biswas
In this book, the authors bring together basic ideas from fracture mechanics and statistical physics, classical theories, simulation and experimental results to make the statistical physics aspects of fracture more accessible. They explain fracture-like phenomena, highlighting the role of disorder and heterogeneity from a statistical physical viewpoint. The role of defects is discussed in brittle and ductile fracture, ductile to brittle transition, fracture dynamics, failure processes with tension as well as compression: experiments, failure of electrical networks, self-organized critical models of earthquake and their extensions to capture the physics of earthquake dynamics. The text also includes a discussion of dynamical transitions in fracture propagation in theory and experiments, as well as an outline of analytical results in fiber bundle model dynamics With its wide scope, in addition to the statistical physics community, the material here is equally accessible to engineers, earth scientists, mechanical engineers, and material scientists. It also serves as a textbook for graduate students and researchers in physics.
