Synopsis Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths in Doncaster by : Stephen Wade
Doncaster has world-wide fame as a railway town. For many years the name was associated with engineering, transport and of course coal. But there is a darker aspect to its history. The sinister side is explored through the research and writing of an experienced crime historian. Sensational tales have been uncovered concerning a variety of dark deeds, including a cloak-and-dagger meeting in an Elizabethan tavern and the murder of a Civil War leader. Over the years Doncaster and district has been the scene of riots, Suffragette militancy, terrible domestic tragedies, sad suicides and brutal murders. The stories here range from the notorious Baccarat Scandal which shocked Victorian society to a betting-room robbery at the races. The author also reminds us about famous criminals associated with the town, as well as a Prince and a hangman, a notorious fraudster , even a London playboy. Shocking, surprising, at times chilling but true, a new layer of the towns social history is now available for the first time; but not for the feint hearted.

Synopsis Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths in the West Riding of Yorkshire by : Vivien Teasdale
Another trawl through the records of dastardly deeds, this time around Yorkshire, taking in the whole of the boundaries of the ancient West Riding, which stretched as far up as Sedbrough in the north-west, just beyond Todmorden in the west, north to Kirkby Malzeard and east to Selby and Goole. Join the Dyon, Stanton and Thornton families if you dare and find out who killed which other member of their family. When the course of true love fails to run smoothly, the result can often be tragic, as it was in the case of star crossed lovers in Leeds and Wakefield or between man and wife as in cases in Doncaster, Thurlstone and Heckmondwike. Nor were children ignored by the law, being both victims and, quite often, perpetrators of foul deeds. Whatever you find in todays newspapers, youll find a parallel here knife crimes, drink-related crimes, bank robberies and mail robberies, riots and terrorism. Theres nothing new under the sun and these tales prove it.

Synopsis Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths in & Around Scunthorpe by : Stephen Wade
A revealing criminal history of the old industrial town in North Lincolnshire, England, that has been home to centuries of dark secrets and twisted crimes. As the iron and steel industries grew in the Victorian period, several villages merged into the town of Scunthorpe, an area with more than its fair share of sordid and bloody secrets. Although mainly rural, the region has been notorious in the annals of crime, from the sixteenth-century rebellion known as the Pilgrimage of Grace to the sensational murder cases of the twentieth century. Some of Scunthorpe’s killings were merely tragic domestic affairs, as industrial workers cracked with stress and alcohol. Other were more appalling, baffling, and the stuff of nightmares to this day. True crime historian Stephen Wade delves into Scunthorpe’s shadowy past: its bizarre murder-suicides, random slayings, cop-killers, pirates and bandits, cold-cases, night-stalkers and “The Black-Out Terror” of 1941. Centuries of dark scandal from the town’s deceptively tranquil fields to the violent mean streets.

Synopsis Tracing Your Prisoner Ancestors by : Stephen Wade
An “excellent book . . . a great introduction to legal terms, offences, procedures, sentences, and much more besides” trom the author of Writing True Crime (Ripperologist). The history of the British prison system only had systematic records from the middle of the nineteenth century. Before that, material on prisoners in local jails and houses of correction was patchy and minimal. In more recent times, many prison records have been destroyed. In Tracing Your Prisoner Ancestors, crime historian Stephen Wade attempts to provide information and guidance to family and social history researchers in this difficult area of criminal records. His book covers the span of time from medieval to modern, and includes some Scottish and Irish sources. The sources explained range broadly from central calendars of prisoners, court records and jail returns, through to memoirs and periodicals. The chapters also include case studies and short biographies of some individuals who experienced our prisons and left some records. “All in all, it is a fascinating read, even if you don’t have prisoner ancestors! Wade has managed to explain the complexities of the criminal system, its records and how they affected our ancestors with his well-researched and illuminating guide.” —Family and Community Historical Research Society Newsletter “Overall, it provides an excellent starting point for family historians to investigate their relations who ended up behind bars.” —WDYTYA? Magazine

Synopsis Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in and Around Barnsley by : Geoffrey Howse
Barnsley and the surrounding area has a dark and sinister past. There were many foul deeds committed throughout the centuries of the most heinous kind -and many suspicious circumstances. Poverty was at the root of many of the early cases. During the Victorian period some seemingly uncaring magistrates appeared to take the view that to be poor was a crime to be dealt with severely and meted out extreme penalties. The unhappy state of some criminals resulted in ending their days in the workhouse. Throughout the 20th century the area was periodically rocked with murder cases which often made the national headlines.

Synopsis Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths in & Around Halifax by : Stephen Wade
Calderdale has gone down in the annals of crime in England as the birthplace of Christie of Rillington Place, and as the haunt of the Yorkshire Ripper. But there is much more in the criminal history of the Halifax area to interest the reader with a taste for true crime. As a town with a shifting population of labour for the new mills of the Industrial Revolution, Halifax in the nineteenth century was a focus for urban disorder and lawbreaking. This book tells some of the tales from this period of social history, and from earlier times, when feuds and brutal punishment for crime were the order of the day. Here are the accounts of murders within the family, but also sad suicides and tragic assaults, public riots and violent vendettas. Every northern town has its darkunderbelly beneath the visible civic progress and commercial achievements Halifax and the cluster of towns nearby have had plenty of this nasty side of history, and these pages recount some of the most heinous and vicious crimes recorded between the anarchy of the Middle Ages and the dark twentieth century. The author, a graduate of Leeds University, is a social historian with a special interest in the chronicles of law and crime in the north. He has been a lecturer at the University of Huddersfield and has edited a number of books on literature and history with a regional context. He is currently working on Unsolved Yorkshire Murders, also published by Wharncliffe Books. He is planning to teach a course on the writing of crime in local history at the University of Nottingham.
