Synopsis Formulation and Application Technologies for Microbial Pesticides by : RJ. Cibulsky
During the past twenty years, a number of technological advancements have been made in the development of microbial pesticides for use in agricultural and forest insect control programs. The microbial pesticide currently used for the majority of these applications has been Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) var. kurstaki. This organism has proven itself to be a valuable tool for the control of lepidopterous insects on vegetables, cotton, soybean, and in hardwood and coniferous forests. The expansion of Bt from the original vegetable crop applications to field crops and forest insect control programs has occurred along with significant advances in technology involving the culture, mass production, formulation, and application of this unique microbe. The current interest in Bt and microbial insect control agents has been heightened by the recent development of significant resistance to chemical insecticides in a number of target insect species.

Synopsis The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture by : National Research Council
Although chemical pesticides safeguard crops and improve farm productivity, they are increasingly feared for their potentially dangerous residues and their effects on ecosystems. The Future Role of Pesticides explores the role of chemical pesticides in the decade ahead and identifies the most promising opportunities for increasing the benefits and reducing the risks of pesticide use. The committee recommends R&D, program, and policy initiatives for federal agriculture authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sectors. This book presents clear overviews of key factors in chemical pesticide use, including: Advances in genetic engineering not only of pest-resistant crops but also of pests themselves. Problems in pesticide useâ€"concerns about the health of agricultural workers, the ability of pests to develop resistance, issues of public perception, and more. Impending shifts in agricultureâ€"globalization of the economy, biological "invasions" of organisms, rising sensitivity toward cross-border environmental issues, and other trends. With a model and working examples, this book offers guidance on how to assess various pest control strategies available to today's agriculturist.

Synopsis Manual on the development and use of FAO and WHO specifications for microbial pesticides by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
In 2001, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) agreed to develop specifications for pesticides jointly, thus providing unique, robust and universally applicable standards for pesticide quality. This joint programme is based on a memorandum of understanding between the two organizations. This 2024 first edition of the Manual on development and use of FAO and WHO specifications for microbial pesticides, which is only available online, supersedes any previous manuals and guidance documents published by either FAO or WHO on this subject. This manual provides the standard process, unified requirements and procedures, harmonized definitions and nomenclature, technical guidelines and standards applicable to microbial pesticides for use in agriculture and public health. FAO and WHO specifications for microbial pesticides based on this manual are developed through the FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Specifications (JMPS) and published on the web sites of the two organizations.
