Corina Keller studies non-perturbative facets of abelian Chern-Simons theories. This is a refinement of the entirely perturbative approach to classical Chern-Simons theory via homotopy factorization algebras of observables that arise from the associated formal moduli problem describing deformations of flat principal bundles with connections over the spacetime manifold. The author shows that for theories with abelian group structure, this factorization algebra of classical observables comes naturally equipped with an action of the gauge group, which allows to encode non-perturbative effects in the classical observables. About the Author: Corina Keller currently is a doctoral student in the research group of Prof. Dr. Damien Calaque at the Université Montpellier, France. She is mostly interested in the mathematical study of field theories. Her master’s thesis was supervised by PD Dr. Alessandro Valentino and Prof. Dr. Alberto Cattaneo at Zurich University, Switzerland.

This book contains 22 lectures presented at the final conference of the Ger man research program (Schwerpunktprogramm) Algorithmic Number The ory and Algebra 1991-1997, sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemein schaft. The purpose of this research program and of the meeting was to bring together developers of computer algebra software and researchers using com putational methods to gain insight into experimental problems and theoret ical questions in algebra and number theory. The book gives an overview on algorithmic methods and on results ob tained during this period. This includes survey articles on the main research projects within the program: • algorithmic number theory emphasizing class field theory, constructive Galois theory, computational aspects of modular forms and of Drinfeld modules • computational algebraic geometry including real quantifier elimination and real algebraic geometry, and invariant theory of finite groups • computational aspects of presentations and representations of groups, especially finite groups of Lie type and their Heeke algebras, and of the isomorphism problem in group theory. Some of the articles illustrate the current state of computer algebra sys tems and program packages developed with support by the research pro gram, such as KANT and LiDIA for algebraic number theory, SINGULAR, RED LOG and INVAR for commutative algebra and invariant theory respec tively, and GAP, SYSYPHOS and CHEVIE for group theory and representation theory.

Classical Deformation Theory is used for determining the completions of local rings of an eventual moduli space. When a moduli variety exists, the main result explored in the book is that the local ring in a closed point can be explicitly computed as an algebraization of the pro-representing hull, called the local formal moduli, of the deformation functor for the corresponding closed point. The book gives explicit computational methods and includes the most necessary prerequisites for understanding associative algebraic geometry. It focuses on the meaning and the place of deformation theory, resulting in a complete theory applicable to moduli theory. It answers the question 'why moduli theory', and gives examples in mathematical physics by looking at the universe as a moduli of molecules, thereby giving a meaning to most noncommutative theories. The book contains the first explicit definition of a noncommutative scheme, not necessarily covered by commutative rings. This definition does not contradict any previous abstract definitions of noncommutative algebraic geometry, but sheds interesting light on other theories, which is left for further investigation.

This book can be understood as a model for teaching commutative algebra, and takes into account modern developments such as algorithmic and computational aspects. As soon as a new concept is introduced, the authors show how the concept can be worked on using a computer. The computations are exemplified with the computer algebra system Singular, developed by the authors. Singular is a special system for polynomial computation with many features for global as well as for local commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. The book includes a CD containing Singular as well as the examples and procedures explained in the book.

It is well known that there are close relations between classes of singularities and representation theory via the McKay correspondence and between representation theory and vector bundles on projective spaces via the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand construction. These relations however cannot be considered to be either completely understood or fully exploited. These proceedings document recent developments in the area. The questions and methods of representation theory have applications to singularities and to vector bundles. Representation theory itself, which had primarily developed its methods for Artinian algebras, starts to investigate algebras of higher dimension partly because of these applications. Future research in representation theory may be spurred by the classification of singularities and the highly developed theory of moduli for vector bundles. The volume contains 3 survey articles on the 3 main topics mentioned, stressing their interrelationships, as well as original research papers.

This volume collects papers presented at the eighth São Carlos Workshop on Real and Complex Singularities, held at the IML, Marseille, July 2004. Like the workshop, this collection establishes the state of the art and presents new trends, new ideas and new results in all of the branches of singularities. Real and Complex Singularities offers a useful summary of leading ideas in singularity theory, and inspiration for future research.
