Synopsis Forever Saul Leiter by :

This revealing collection of Saul Leiter’s work, much of it published here for the first time, underscores the photographer’s unique contributions to the development of twentieth-century photography and the use of color. Saul Leiter’s painterly images evoke the flow and rhythm of life on the midcentury streets of New York in luminous color, at a time when his contemporaries were shooting in black and white. His mastery of color is displayed in unconventional cityscapes in which reflections, transparency, complex framing, and mirroring effects are married to a very personal printing style, creating a unique kind of urban view; his complex and impressionistic photographs are as much about evoking an atmosphere as nailing the decisive moment. Leiter’s studio in New York’s East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now home to the Saul Leiter Foundation, which is undertaking a full-scale survey and organization of Leiter’s more than eighty thousand images with the aim of compiling his complete archive. This volume contains items discovered through this undertaking: valuable documents that reveal the secrets of Saul Leiter’s process, unpublished works, popular color works, black-and-white images that have never been published before, as well as images that hold the memories of those closest to him, taken in private. As Saul Leiter said, “photographs are often treated as capturing important moments, but they are really small fragments and memories of the world that never ends.”

Synopsis Saul Leiter by : Max Kozloff

"Saul Leiter's early black and white photographs are as innovative and challenging as his highly regarded early work in color. Breaking with the documentary tradition, Leiter responded to the dynamic street life of New York City with a spontaneity and openness that resulted in vibrant, impressionistic images that have the immediacy of an accomplished artist's sketch. With his unconventional framing and nuanced use of light, shadow and tone, Leiter created images with a lyrical subtlety like no other photographer of his era, and brought the same sensibility to his intimate and frank portrayals of family members and friends. Early Black and White shows the impressive range of Leiter's early photography."--Slipcase.

Synopsis Saul Leiter by : Robert Benton

Fed by thrilling recent discoveries from Saul Leiter's vast archive, In My Room provides an in-depth study of the nude, through intimate photographs of the women Leiter knew. Showing deeply personal interior spaces, often illuminated by the lush natural light of the artist's studio in New York City's East Village, these black-and-white images reveal the unique collaboration between Leiter and his subjects. In the 1970s, Leiter planned to make a book of his nudes, but never realized the project in his lifetime. Now we are granted a first-time look at this body of work, which Leiter began on his arrival in New York in 1946 and chipped away at over the next two decades. Leiter, who was also a painter, incorporates abstract elements into these photographs and often shows the influence of his favorite artists, including Bonnard, Vuillard and Matisse. The prolific Leiter, who painted and took pictures fervently up to his death, worked in relative obscurity well into his eighties. Leiter preferred solitude in life, and resisted any type of explanation or analysis of his work. With In My Room, Leiter ushers viewers into his private world while retaining his strong sense of mystery.

Synopsis Painted Nudes by : Saul Leiter

Saul Leiter (1923-2013) has been hailed as one of the great pioneers of 20th century colour photography. His body of work spans more than 70 years and is in the collections of many important museums. With the landmark publication of his monograph "Early Color" (2006) his work at last came to the fore. The book was followed by numerous exhibitions, the largest of which was a major retrospective at Deichtorhallen in Hamburg (2012). In 2013, Thomas Leach made In No Great Hurry, a full-feature documentary film about Saul Leiter and his work. But Leiter was more than a great photographer; he was and always had been a prolific painter, though this side of his creative life received far less attention. One strand among his paintings is noticeable: the art of painting over prints of nudes that he himself photographed and printed. This publication reproduces over eighty such painted nudes, created over a period of over forty years. This long overdue book sheds light on the vitality and originality of Saul Leiter s art and his mastery of colour. "

Synopsis The Unseen Saul Leiter by : Margit Erb

A thrilling trove of newly discovered color works from the photographer celebrated for his pioneering painterly vision Now firmly established as one of the world's greatest photographers, Saul Leiter (1923-2013) was relatively little known until the 2006 publication of Saul Leiter: Early Color, when he was already in his eighties. Choosing to shoot in color when black and white was the norm, Leiter portrayed midcentury New York's street life with a gorgeous painterliness that evoked the sensuality of his Abstract Expressionist contemporaries Rothko and Newman. His studio in the East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation, which has commenced a full-scale survey of his more than 80,000 works. This volume contains works discovered through this project--specifically, color photography from slides never before published or seen by the public. It is edited by Margit Erb and Michael Parillo of the Saul Leiter Foundation, and is embellished with texts that describe how Leiter assembled his slide archive and how it is being catalogued and restored. Saul Leiterwas born in Pittsburgh in 1923. He pioneered a painterly approach to color photography in the 1940s and produced covers for fashion magazines such as Vogueand Harper's Bazaar, before largely withdrawing from public attention in the 1980s. The publication of his first collection, Early Color, by Steidl in 2006, inspired an avid "rediscovery" that led to worldwide exhibitions and the release of a documentary, In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter(2014). He died in New York in 2013.

Synopsis Day Sleeper by : Sam Contis

In this book, Sam Contis presents a new window onto the work of the American photographer Dorothea Lange. Drawing from Lange's extensive archive, Contis constructs a fragmented, unfamiliar world centred around the figure of the day sleeper - at once a symbol of respite and oblivion. The book shows us one artist through the eyes of another, with Contis responding to resonances between her and Lange's ways of seeing. It reveals a largely unknown side of Lange, and includes previously unseen photographs of her family, portraiture from her studio, and pictures made in the streets of San Francisco and the East Bay. Day Sleeper will be featured alongside other works of Contis's in the exhibition Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures at the Museum of Modern Art, February-May 2020.

Synopsis New Japanese Photography by : Shōji Yamagishi

"Within the past twenty-five years the character of Japanese photography has changed radically, and its former dependence on the patterns and attitudes of the traditional Japanese media has been replaced by a sometimes harshly realistic objectivity. At the root of this change was a desire to find ways in which photography could deal directly with contemporary experience, rather than with the basically tormalistic issues of picture structure. The work produced under this impetus has influenced photographic thinking throughout the world. This book surveys the major innovative figures in recent Japanese photography and reports on the most significant work being done by younger photographers in Japan today. Alive with visual excitement, the volume presents the distinctive work of fifteen photographers."--Page 4 de la couverture.
