Synopsis Floyd Ingraham's Springwater: A Finger Lakes Hamlet by : Julie Jeffery Manwarren
Over a century ago, amateur photographer Floyd Ingraham took hundreds of images of a western Finger Lakes hamlet in New York. Ingraham's lens captured the landscape, buildings, and people of Springwater, New York, and neighboring communities. This previously unpublished collection gives one photographer's view of early-20th-century life in a small, rural community in the Finger Lakes. Ingraham's photographs give context to the region's historical narrative and have captured forever the time in which he lived, the people that he knew, and the place he dearly loved.

Synopsis A President in Yellowstone by : Frank H. Goodyear
On the morning of July 30, 1883, President Chester A. Arthur embarked on a trip of historic proportions. His destination was Yellowstone National Park, established by an act of Congress only eleven years earlier. No sitting president had ever traveled this far west. Arthur’s host and primary guide would be Philip H. Sheridan, the famed Union general. Also slated to join the expedition was a young photographer, Frank Jay Haynes. This elegant—and fascinating—book showcases Haynes’s remarkable photographic album from their six-week journey. A premier nineteenth-century landscape photographer, F. Jay Haynes, as he was known professionally, originally compiled the leather-bound album as a commemorative piece. As only six copies are known to exist, it has rarely been seen. The album’s 104 images are accompanied by captions written by General Sheridan’s brother, Colonel Michael V. Sheridan, who wrote daily dispatches that were distributed by the Associated Press. In his informative introduction, historian Frank H. Goodyear III provides background about the excursion and explains the historic and aesthetic significance of Haynes’s photographs. He then re-creates Arthur’s journey by reintroducing Haynes’s stunning images—along with Sheridan’s original captions—including views of the Tetons and other landmarks; portraits of President Arthur, General Sheridan, and fellow travelers engaged in activities along the route; and images of the Shoshone and Arapaho leaders who gathered to greet the visiting party. Published on the occasion of the reopening of the Haynes Photography Shop in Yellowstone, A President in Yellowstone offers a unique entry into the park’s storied past.

Synopsis Daniel Shed Genealogy by : Frank E. Shedd
Excerpt from Daniel Shed Genealogy: Ancestry and Descendants of Daniel Shed of Braintree, Massachusetts, 1327-1920 About 1880 the author sought to learn something about his own great-grandfather who had been, tradition said, a revolutionary soldier. In satisfying this curiosity he found others of the family equally anxious to learn about their ancestors and thus his researches went on, gathering records where many had sowed and few or none had ever reaped, until they assumed considerable volume. The family register thus begun and prosecuted and herein pre sented contains little that will interest the world at large from either an historical or literary view, yet it is hoped it will prove of some service to those who, bound by ties of a common ancestry, have their relationships thus brought together for the first time. It is not a history of famous men nor of high dignitaries in Church or State. Many men seek to honor themselves in that certain ones of their name have been great soldiers, i'lsts, preachers, of whose rank they speak with pride.' Our forefathers were plain men whose true record is that of honest yeomen, earning their daily bread by the sweat of their brows, clearing up a new country and making homes for their families; pledging their lives for these rights, even through long wars, and once their rights secured returning as sturdily to their customary avocations. Of such men, others' ancestors as well as ours, and their careers, it may not be necessary to write a history. They need it not; the Whole country is their memorial; without them it would not now exist; it is a worthy and lasting witness. But to collect the names of these men and women too, from the fast fading pages of many books, here and there, to say that they did well by all.
