Flinders Aluminum Fabrication Corporation burned to the ground on the night of November 16. George Avery, an employee of the plant, died inside. Plaintiff Jackson, the sole stockholder of the company, has filed a civil action lawsuit to recover damages owed from the policy issued by defendant Mismo Fire Insurance Company. The defendant has refused to pay, claiming that the fire was the work of an arsonist, thus indicating deliberate fraud. Mismo asserts that Jackson conspired with others to burn the plant in order to collect what was promised in the insurance policy. The State of NITA has charged Arthur Jackson and his assistant, Sonia Peterson, with commercial arson. Prosecutors allege that the two conspired with George Avery to burn down the Flinders Aluminum Fabrication factory. The original trial resulted in a hung jury, after which Sonia Peterson pled guilty to conspiracy to commit a felony and agreed to testify against Arthur Jackson. Jackson maintains his innocence. Avery cannot testify because he died in the fire. There are four witnesses for both the State and the defense. By tracing the history of Yudahua from the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century, this study analyzes a successful inland business model among textile companies in modern China. The steady growth of this enterprise relied primarily on its strategy to focus on low-end markets and to locate new mills in underdeveloped interior regions. This strategy further allowed the enterprise to pioneer industrialization in its host localities, demonstrating a major social and economic impact on the local societies. At the same time, Yudahua’s unique team leadership pattern—five leading families shared its ownership and management—made the business an atypical family firm and allowed relatively easy institutional departure from Chinese social networks and adoption of Western corporate hierarchy.
