Synopsis F Is for Fishing by : Larry Barker with Joshua and Sarah Jones

"F" is for Fishing began with a fishing trip. Larry and Melissa Barker invited Sarah and Josh Jones on a fishing trip on Lake Tarpon, Florida, about two years ago. Their grandmother, Marje Monach, Melissa, Larry and the two children had a great time on the lake that day. The children each caught their first fish and were "hooked" from then on. Larry has been a tournament bass fisherman and outdoor writer for years, and asked Josh and Sarah if they would like to help write a children's book about bass fishing. The children had no idea at the time what they were getting into, but both said "yes!" without hesitation. Over the past two years, the authors, Larry, Josh and Sarah have taken several exciting fishing trips. The photos at chapter openings were taken on some of those trips. The writing process developed over time. The first few sessions involved talking through some of the possible topics to include in the book. After each session, Larry would write a draft and both children would read it and suggest improvements. Eventually, Marje, Melissa and her mother, Pat Fisher, became involved in the editing process. After many drafts and numerous inputs from all contributors, the book was completed. At this writing Sarah is 11 years old and Joshua is 13. They live in Clearwater, Florida. In addition to fishing, Sarah loves acrobatics. Joshua enjoys computer games and the outdoors. Both are enthusiastic readers. Although some parts of the book are completely fi ctional, many scenes are based on real life fishing adventures. We hope that you enjoy reading the book as much as we enjoyed fishing and writing it! -BEI Outdoor Publishing

Synopsis Fishing for Truth by : Alan Christopher Finlayson

Fishing for Truth is the complex story of the role of science in the decline of the Northern Cod stocks. At issue are conflicting interpretations of recent events, institutional and scientific texts, and scientific data. The central claim of the book is that all knowledge, including scientific knowledge, is influenced by social process. Finlayson, a sociologist, conducted extensive interviews with scientists and bureaucrats in the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO); he argues that failure to predict fish stocks is closely related to the failure to recognize how scientists' interpretations of natural reality are themselves socially constructed to a crucial degree.

Synopsis The Philosophical Fisherman by : Harold Blaisdell

“My favorite book on fishing—a classic from one of my favorite writers.” —John Randolph, former editor, Fly Fisherman Earthy and philosophical, practical yet speculative—this book is a wonderful and enduring portrait of a fisherman’s temperament. Full of the late Harold F. Blaisdell’s infectious humanity and wisdom, The Philosophical Fisherman, long out of print, is a classic. Blaisdell is always independent and original in his thinking. He refutes the widely held theory that game fish attack artificial lures because they believe them to be baitfish. He argues that fish do not fear leaders per se, but become alarmed only if the leader results in the unnatural movement of the bait or lure. He debunks the vaunted effectiveness of the artificial nymph, explores the best methods of wet and dry-fly fishing, and tests his theories against such gamefish as trout, smallmouth bass, landlocked salmon, walleyes, and northern pike. There is something here for everyone who fishes—including a persuasive argument that the average angler anywhere in the country can invariably find superb fishing with in hour’s drive of his home. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
