Eugene O'Neill's autobiographical play Long Day's Journey into Night is regarded as his finest work. First published by Yale University Press in 1956, it won the Pulitzer Prize in 1957 and has since sold more than one million copies. This paper's matter is to find out what function drinking or the consumption of other drugs have for the characters of the two plays. Furthermore a comparison will be made between Hickey in The Iceman Cometh and Mary Cavan Tyrone in Long Day's Journey into Night in order to show that they have similar functions in their respective plays.
