Synopsis The Legacy of Friedrich Von Hayek by : Peter J. Boettke

The three volumes on the economist/humanist, Friedrich von Hayek (1900-92) are divided into politics (v.1), philosophy (v.2), and economics (v.3), areas which Hayek attempted to interweave. The set begins with a general introduction in which Boettke maintains that Hayek is narrowly remembered for his opposition to socialism despite his Nobel Prize for economics (1974) and his scholarship in theoretical psychology, political philosophy, legal anthropology, the philosophy of science, and the history of ideas. Boettke describes Hayek this way: "... a technical economist, concerned with philosophical issues; a philosopher of mind, pursuing the implications of his conclusions on the nature of the mind for social scientific research; and a classical liberal political economist seeking to integrate the knowledge from technical economics and philosophy for the way we understand and study the political order of a free people." The introduction, ending with a chronology of Hayek's career, and a chronological list of his publications is followed by a total of 72 reprinted articles from the 1960s to the 1990s by scholars with only their professional association listed. Contributors include M. Polanyi, Carlo Zappia, Israel M. Kirzner, Mario Rizzo, John Gray, Jacob Viner, Richard Bellamy and numerous others. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Synopsis The Scottish Enlightenment and the Theory of Spontaneous Order by : Ronald Hamowy

Every step and every movement of the multitude, even in what are termed enlightened ages, are made with equal blindness to the future; and nations stumble upon establishments, which are indeed the result of human action, but not the execution of any human design. Adam FergusonDuring the Scottish Enlightenment, David Hume, Adam Smith, Adam Ferguson, and other lesser thinkers described a theory of spontaneously generated social order. Ronald Hamowy discusses their contributions to this significant area of social theory, noting that the revolutionary aspect of these philosophers thoughts was the proposition that social phenomena of a high degree of intricacy are not the product of intentional design. Hamowy shows that Hume is best known for his application of the theory to justice, developing it most thoroughly in the "Treatise of Human Nature. "Adam Smith s first treatment of it is in the "Theory of Moral Sentiment, "published before the significant "Wealth of Nations. "There Smith uses it to explain the development of general rules that compose the moral fabric of societies. All of these thinkers used their notion of spontaneously generated social order to explain systems of moral rules and social systems. In addition Adam Ferguson and David Hume applied the theory to language, as well as to economic development."

In domg so, I do not profess to offer any thing new or original. My object is to resent to the younger part of the profession some ceding facts, which may serve to direct their further inquiries on a subject of great and general interest. Synopsis New Grub Street by : George Gissing

New Grub Street: Large Print by George Gissing For many readers New Grub Street is Gissing's masterpiece. If this is not accepted, it remains beyond doubt one of his most interesting and most powerful novels. As a realistic picture of the literary in late Victorian England, New Grub Street has few rivals. There is much of Gissing himself, his idealism, pride, impracticality, in Edwin Reardon the study of the creative artist oppressed by poverty bears the stamp of bitter experience. Of the other characters, pedantic Alfred Yule, the humble scholar Biffen, ambitious and worldly Jasper Milvain are still recognizable literary types. New Grub Street is a sombre and moving story, cynical in its conclusions, but deriving from its close observation and deep integrity a lasting importance for students of character and period.
