This novel is based on true accounts. I have conducted many interviews here in the United States and have traveled to Cyprus for additional research. The atrocities described in the novel are factual. When Turkish soldiers invade his Cypriot village in 1974, twelve-year old Haji witnesses brutal atrocities, including the torturous murders of his father and sister while his pregnant mother was repeatedly being raped. With the help of his beautiful school teacher Rebecca, (dishonored many times by Turkish soldiers) they flee their village only to face constant life-threatening danger wherever they went; as the barbaric Turkish soldiers continue to pursue them. Their struggle to survive the Turkish soldiers and then to erase their horrible memories that haunt them lead to the dramatic ending.

His religious awareness evolved beyond the confining borders of the Orthodoxy of Cyprus to the engaging values of broader Christianity. His patriotism shifted from ethnocentric, narrow, fanatic Greekness to an appreciation of the Hellenic culture's universality. The important message from this book comes from Dafnis' life journey, his encounter between violence and peace, and his revealing of how, from the violence and distrust between the Cypriot Greek and Turkish communities, it is possible to reach peaceful coexistence and cooperation as Cypriots, while maintaining their distinct identities. There are lessons for the turbulent Eastern Mediterranean, and especially for Greek- Turkish relations, and beyond. Stahis Solomon Panagides, the author of this edition, is Dafnis’ brother. He is an economist with extensive experience in international development and conflict resolution, having worked with the World Bank, the Organization of American States, the Ford Foundation, and the University of California (Berkeley). He served as the Resident Country Director of the Millennium Challenge Corporation in Cape Verde, a U.S. Federal development agency. He is a founding member of Esquel Group Foundation, an institution dedicated to civil society participation and sustainable development, with affiliates in Latin America. In 1954-56, he served as the EOKA (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters) youth leader of his high school during the Cyprus liberation struggle against British Colonial Rule and for its Union with Greece.

Most of the Cypriot population, especially the lower classes, remained loyal to the British cause during the Great War and the island contributed significantly to the First World War, with men and materials. The British acknowledged this yet failed to institute political and economic reforms once the war ended. The obsession of Greek Cypriot elites with enosis (union with Greece), which only increased after the war, and the British dismissal of increasing the role of Cypriots in government, bringing the Christian and Muslim communities closer, and expanding franchise to all classes and sexes, led to serious problems down the line, not least the development of a democratic deficit. Andrekos Varnava studies the events and the impact of this crucial period.

Cyprus ticks all the boxes. Sun. Sea. Cheap food and drink. Friendly, smiling people. How would you like to live there? Is this island heaven too good to be true? Surely there can be no darker side? Is there no lingering resentment from the colonial period and the bitter and vicious guerrilla war which ended it? What is Modern Greece, apart from and beyond the bulk of information that one would find in an encyclopaedia and the established stereotypes?
