Synopsis Power-Aware Computer Systems by : Babak Falsafi

Welcome to the proceedings of the Power-Aware Computer Systems (PACS 2004) workshop held in conjunction with the 37th Annual International Sym- sium on Microarchitecture (MICRO-37). The continued increase of power and energy dissipation in computer systems has resulted in higher cost, lower re- ability, and reduced battery life in portable systems. Consequently, power and energy have become ?rst-class constraints at all layers of modern computer s- tems. PACS 2004 is the fourth workshop in its series to explore techniques to reduce power and energy at all levels of computer systems and brings together academic and industry researchers. The papers in these proceedings span a wide spectrum of areas in pow- aware systems. We have grouped the papers into the following categories: (1) microarchitecture- and circuit-level techniques, (2) power-aware memory and interconnect systems, and (3) frequency- and voltage-scaling techniques. The ?rst paper in the microarchitecture group proposes banking and wri- back ?ltering to reduce register ?le power. The second paper in this group - timizes both delay and power of the issue queue by packing two instructions in each issue queue entry and by memorizing upper-order bits of the wake-up tag. The third paper proposes bit slicing the datapath to exploit narrow width operations, and the last paper proposes to migrate application threads from one core to another in a multi-core chip to address thermal problems.

Synopsis Power Aware Design Methodologies by : Massoud Pedram

Power Aware Design Methodologies was conceived as an effort to bring all aspects of power-aware design methodologies together in a single document. It covers several layers of the design hierarchy from technology, circuit logic, and architectural levels up to the system layer. It includes discussion of techniques and methodologies for improving the power efficiency of CMOS circuits (digital and analog), systems on chip, microelectronic systems, wirelessly networked systems of computational nodes and so on. In addition to providing an in-depth analysis of the sources of power dissipation in VLSI circuits and systems and the technology and design trends, this book provides a myriad of state-of-the-art approaches to power optimization and control. The different chapters of Power Aware Design Methodologies have been written by leading researchers and experts in their respective areas. Contributions are from both academia and industry. The contributors have reported the various technologies, methodologies, and techniques in such a way that they are understandable and useful.

Synopsis Energy Systems Design for Low-Power Computing by : Gatti, Rathishchandra Ramachandra

With the advancement in computing technologies, the need for power is also increasing. Approximately 3% of the total power consumption is spent by data centers and computing devices. This percentage will rise when more internet of things (IoT) devices are connected to the web. The handling of this data requires immense power. Energy Systems Design for Low-Power Computing disseminates the current research and the state-of-the-art technologies, topologies, standards, and techniques for the deployment of energy intelligence in edge computing, distributed computing, and centralized computing infrastructure. Covering topics such as electronic cooling, stochastic data analysis, and energy consumption, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for data center designers, VLSI designers, network developers, students and teachers of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Synopsis Power Aware Computing by : Robert Graybill

With the advent of portable and autonomous computing systems, power con sumption has emerged as a focal point in many research projects, commercial systems and DoD platforms. One current research initiative, which drew much attention to this area, is the Power Aware Computing and Communications (PAC/C) program sponsored by DARPA. Many of the chapters in this book include results from work that have been supported by the PACIC program. The performance of computer systems has been tremendously improving while the size and weight of such systems has been constantly shrinking. The capacities of batteries relative to their sizes and weights has been also improv ing but at a rate which is much slower than the rate of improvement in computer performance and the rate of shrinking in computer sizes. The relation between the power consumption of a computer system and it performance and size is a complex one which is very much dependent on the specific system and the technology used to build that system. We do not need a complex argument, however, to be convinced that energy and power, which is the rate of energy consumption, are becoming critical components in computer systems in gen eral, and portable and autonomous systems, in particular. Most of the early research on power consumption in computer systems ad dressed the issue of minimizing power in a given platform, which usually translates into minimizing energy consumption, and thus, longer battery life.

Synopsis Multicore Computing by : Sanguthevar Rajasekaran

Every area of science and engineering today has to process voluminous data sets. Using exact, or even approximate, algorithms to solve intractable problems in critical areas, such as computational biology, takes time that is exponential in some of the underlying parameters. Parallel computing addresses this issue and has become affordable with the advent of multicore architectures. However, programming multicore machines is much more difficult due to oddities existing in the architectures. Offering insights into different facets of this area, Multicore Computing: Algorithms, Architectures, and Applications focuses on the architectures, algorithms, and applications of multicore computing. It will help readers understand the intricacies of these architectures and prepare them to design efficient multicore algorithms. Contributors at the forefront of the field cover the memory hierarchy for multicore and manycore processors, the caching strategy Flexible Set Balancing, the main features of the latest SPARC architecture specification, the Cilk and Cilk++ programming languages, the numerical software library Parallel Linear Algebra Software for Multicore Architectures (PLASMA), and the exact multipattern string matching algorithm of Aho-Corasick. They also describe the architecture and programming model of the NVIDIA Tesla GPU, discuss scheduling directed acyclic graphs onto multi/manycore processors, and evaluate design trade-offs among Intel and AMD multicore processors, IBM Cell Broadband Engine, and NVIDIA GPUs. In addition, the book explains how to design algorithms for the Cell Broadband Engine and how to use the backprojection algorithm for generating images from synthetic aperture radar data.
