Synopsis Electric Arc Furnace: Methods to Decrease Energy Consumption by : Alberto N. Conejo

The Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) will become the largest producer of steel worldwide, replacing the conventional route through the blast furnace and BOF. In most developed countries the EAF process is already the main steelmaking reactor. This is due to many advantages, such as much lower emissions of CO2, higher flexibility in furnace capacity and higher flexibility in the raw materials such as scrap, direct reduced iron (DRI) and pig iron. The EAF process has also experienced a larger level of automation that provides a higher productivity. However, the EAF process also has a large number of limitations in comparison with the BOF, for example; (i) use of an expensive type of energy (electric energy), (2) very poor stirring conditions which results in lower decarburization rates, (3) residual elements in steel scrap, (3) cost of scrap can be higher than iron ore, (4) dependance on DRI to produce higher quality steels, (5) higher heat losses, (6) lower metallic yield (slag leaves the furnace losing iron and heat). If the EAF process overcomes these limitations it will be able to fully overcome the BF-BOF route and become the dominant process for steelmaking in the 21st century. This book discusses in detail 15 methods to decrease energy consumption in the EAF. Decreasing energy consumption requires an integral approach which means that all methods should be fully understood and optimized.

Synopsis Innovation in Electric Arc Furnaces by : Yuri N. Toulouevski

This book equips a reader with knowledge necessary for critical analysis of innovations in electric arc furnaces and helps to select the most effective ones and for their successful implementation. The book also covers general issues related to history of development, current state and prospects of steelmaking in Electric Arc Furnaces. Therefore, it can be useful for everybody who studies metallurgy, including students of colleges and universities. The modern concepts of mechanisms of Arc Furnace processes are discussed in the book at the level sufficient to solve practical problems: To help readers lacking knowledge required in the field of heat transfer as well as hydro-gas dynamics, it contains several chapters which provide the required minimum of information in these fields of science. In order to better assess different innovations, the book describes experience of the application of similar innovations in open-hearth furnaces and oxygen converters. Some promising ideas on key issues regarding intensification of the heat, which are of interest for developers of new processes and equipment for Electric Arc Furnaces, are also the concern of the book It should be noted, that carrying out the simplified calculations as distinct from using "off the shelf" programs greatly promotes comprehensive understanding of physical basics of processes and effects produced by various factors. This book gives numerous examples of such calculations performed by means of simplified methods and formulas. Getting familiar with material in this book will allow the reader to perform required calculations on his / her own without any difficulties.

Synopsis Fuel Arc Furnace (FAF) for Effective Scrap Melting by : Yuri N. Toulouevski

This book presents a new electric arc furnace process and discusses potential for developing a steelmaking aggregate of the new generation, namely the Fuel Arc Furnace based on existing shaft furnaces. It also reviews the history of developing various types of furnaces with the scrap preheating and flat bath advantages of these furnaces, identifying their disadvantages and presenting methods of eliminating them.

Synopsis Electric Arc Furnace with Flat Bath by : Yuri N. Toulouevski

The book contains an analysis of theoretical dependences, bottlenecks and limiting factors of a new technology used in both Consteel and shaft furnaces operating with flat bath. Performances obtained and potentialities of these furnaces are examined. Based on this analysis, a steel melting aggregate of the new type – fuel arc furnace FAF has been developed and offered. In comparison with the best modern electric arc furnaces of identical capacity the productivity of FAF is higher by 36% and electrical energy consumption is lower by a factor of 1.8. Environment characteristics are considerably improved.

Synopsis The Reduction of Iron Ores by : Ludwig von Bogdandy

For the English edition the book was revised by the authors, taking into account a number of suggestions of the readers of the German edition. Some of the most important publications in the field of iron ore reduction, which appeared since 1967, have been used to bring the manuscript as far as possible up to date. The kind assistance of Dr. K. BOHNENKAMP of the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Eisenforschung, Dusseldorf, was much appreciated in this respect. Ohapters 2.9 and 2.10, dealing with the reduction of molten oxide slags by solid carbon and with the contribution of the water-gas reaction to iron ore reduction, have been added for the English edition. Ohapter 2.9 has been completely revised with the kind assistance of Dr. H. J. GRABKE, Stuttgart. Dipl.-Ing. J. LODDE contributed to this edition by revising the bibliography. Owing to the rapid development of the blast furnace it was necessary to revise Ohapter 5 considerably. In this field many valuable suggestions have been made by Dipl.-Ing. G. LANGE and Dipl.-Ing. P. HEINRICH. Furthermore, Ohapters3 and 4 have been thoroughly revised by Dr.-Ing. E. FORSTER and Dr.-Ing. U. SCHIERLOH. Last, but not least, we have to thank our translators for their excellent work.

Synopsis Electric Arc Furnace Efficiency by : Edmund H. McIntyre

Abstract: "This report reviews electric arc furnace technologies, equipment, charge materials, and operating practices with respect to optimizing energy use. It is designed to provide operators and utility personnel with an understanding of the factors impacting the use of electrical energy. Such understanding will be supportive of the continuing upward trend of electric arc furnace steel production as a percentage of the domestic total."

Synopsis The Chinese Shadow on India’s Eastward Engagement by : Sanjay K. Bhardwaj

India, one of the largest importers of oil in the world, has been diversifying its energy resource options and moving towards greater energy security. This book analyses India’s potential for building energy ties in the Asia–Pacific considering the global and regional power politics. Facing China’s growing influence in Asia, India’s eastward engagement with its extended neighbours has been entrenched in its Act East Policy and institutional commitments towards Southeast Asia. This volume focuses on diverse facets of energy security beyond the traditional understanding of demand and supply and price and stability. It examines India’s energy sector, its dependence on hydrocarbons, and the push towards renewable and alternate energy resources. It further looks at the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean and South China Sea regions in geopolitical negotiations from an energy perspective and how China’s influence in the region will affect India’s moves towards greater energy cooperation with the countries of East Asia. With contributions by leading experts, the volume seeks to fill a major void in this theme and cater to the needs of a variety of audiences including academics, policymakers and experts in international relations, geopolitics and geoeconomics, and professionals in the field of energy studies.
